How To Build a Garden Trellis

Jardins are useful for supporting plants, hanging vines, and holding planters, but they can be expensive. You can make your own garden fence for less than buying one.You can make your own garden trellis to complete the look of your garden.

Step 1: Pick out your tools and supplies.

It's not hard to make a garden trellis, but it requires some special tools and materials. You will need a saw, drill, eye, and ear protection, as well as 2 12 inch exterior grade screws tape and a pencil.

Step 2: Measure and mark your boards.

Measure your boards to the dimensions that you need for the project. To mark where the boards need to be cut, use your pencil. You will need to measure and mark your 8 foot boards so that you can use them as spacers.

Step 3: You should cut your boards.

After you have finished measuring and marking your boards, you can use a saw to cut them.To cut the boards to the required dimensions, use the pencil marks that you made on them. When using the saw, make sure to wear ear and eye protection.Don't cut your wood pieces with your fingers. If you don't have a saw or are worried about cutting wood, you can go to the hardware store.

Step 4: The ends and edges of the boards should be sanded.

If you can, smooth out the rough edges on the ends of the boards. The ends and edges of your boards can be smoothed out with a power or manual sander. If you want to remove the larger flaws in the wood, you should start with a coarse grit sandpaper. You can finish sanding the edges with a #180 or #150 sandpaper. If you are using a power sander, make sure you wear ear and eye protection.

Step 5: The frame needs to be created.

If you want your pieces to be parallel with each other, lay them out.Place two of your pieces on top of each other to make them look like a picture frame.Next, screw the corners of the boards. The four corners have screws put into them to keep the trellis from pivoting. If you want to prevent the screws from splitting the wood, you can make pilot holes. If you make pilot holes, they should be the same size as your screws. Before you place the screws, use a smaller drill bit to create the pilot hole.

Step 6: You should connect the last two boards to the 48 inch boards.

You should have two pieces left after you have created the frame. To determine where to connect your last two pieces, Measure along each of your 48 inch frame pieces. There should be an even distribution of these two pieces between the two 72 inch pieces. The 72 inch pieces should be secured with a couple of screws.

Step 7: Attach your other boards to the frame.

Place pencil marks to indicate where you want to put your remaining 48 inch boards. If you want the boards to be straight, you need to make sure the marks are even. One way to get a sense of how to space your boards is to place one board across the center of the 72 inch boards. The spaces that are left should be used for the other four pieces. Before deciding where to place the boards, consider how you plan to use the trellis. If you want to hang a planter, you could have a couple of boards lower to the ground. You should secure the boards with screws after you have decided where they should be placed.

Step 8: If you want, add spacers.

If you want to leave a gap between the wall and the back of your trellis, you can add some spacers. If you want to hang something from the front, you can add a spacers to it.If you add spacers to the back of your trellis, make sure they are secured to each of the four corners as well as a few in the center.Place the spacers wherever you think you need them if you add them to the front of your trellis.Attach your spacers with a screw or drill.

Step 9: Hang your vines.

Attach your fence or wall with a drill and screws.Place screws at the four corners of the trellis, as well as a couple of screws in the center to secure it in place.Make sure that the screws that you use are long enough to go all the way through the wall behind it.If you want to secure the trellis to the wall, you will need a screw that is at least five inches long.
