A Murphy bed is a bed that folds up into a cabinet to make more space in a room.Pre-made wall beds can cost a lot of money.Building your own costs less than the price. You can do this job with carpentry skills. The mattress frame and cabinet should be constructed from plywood boards and wooden blocks.Attach the cabinet to the wall. The bed can be lifted and lowered with the help of a hardware kit.Adding a bed stand and security bolts will finish the job.
Step 1: There are two pieces of plywood 80 in long and 15 in wide.
The standard dimensions are for a queen-sized bed.Measure each piece of wood using a tape measure or ruler. To mark the lines that you will cut, use a straight edge and pencil.Make sure the lines are straight.Cut straight along each line. The side rails are used for the mattress frame. You can use either a table saw or circular saw.If you use a circular saw, make sure the wood is stable on the saw horses.Wear gloves and goggles when you use a saw.You have to keep your fingers at least 6 inches away from the blade. The dimensions are for a queen-size bed.Measure the mattress you use to get the correct dimensions.King is 80 in (200 cm) long and 76 in (190 cm), Full is 75 in 190 cm and Twin is 38 in 97 cm.
Step 2: Cut 2 more pieces of plywood, 60 in long and 15 in wide.
The bed frame contains these pieces.Measure and cut the frame the same way.
Step 3: The sides of the frame need to be screwed together.
The side rails are on the edge. The edge of the side rail should be covered by theheader.Attach the 2 pieces with screws. The other side rail needs to be screwed to the opposite side.To complete the rectangular bed frame, screw the footer at the bottom.Make sure the edges are even.To remove the screws, run the drill in reverse and drill them again.
Step 4: 2 plywood boards are cut to 30 inches by 80 inches.
The base of the mattress frame is formed by 2 boards. To mark the cutting lines on each board, use a straightedge and pencil. The boards should be cut with a circular saw or table saw.The standard plywood boards are 120 cm by 96 cm.If you are using a standard board, you should cut 18 inches (46 cm) from the width and 16 inches (40 cm).If you are building a frame for a different-sized mattress, make sure to adjust the measurements. The frames should cover the same dimensions as the boards.
Step 5: Line up the boards on top of the frame.
The corners of the mattress frame should be lined up with each board.Make sure the boards cover the frame.Everything is even if you line the board edges with the frame. There is no space between the boards if they are pushed together.
Step 6: Every 6 inches, drill a screw around the frame border.
Go through the flat boards and into the mattress frame. At this interval, drill screws around the entire border.Don't pierce the sides of the support frames if the screws go straight into them.Remove them and drill a new screw 1 inch away.Make sure the boards don't shift by checking the board positioning every few screws.Everything should be kept through the whole process.
Step 7: The pieces of wood are 60 inches (150 cm) long.
The wood supports the bed frame. When you have 10 pieces that are at least 150 cm long, cut 2 in (5.1 cm) x two in strips. If you can't find 2 x 2 wood blocks, split them in half and use a saw. There are pieces of wood that need to be split.Keep your fingers away from the saw blade.Carefully cut through the wooden blocks to split the line.
Step 8: There is a horizontal support beam inside the frame.
Place one support beam at the far end of the frame.Press it into the frame so that it touches both sides. Then drill a screw through the frame and into the support block. When you reach the other side, place another support every 10 inches. The support blocks may be too long to fit inside the frame. If they are, shave the end.It won't attach securely if it's cut too much.
Step 9: You can paint.
It's up to you to decorate the bed.You can either stain or paint the wood. It's easier to paint when the bed is still in pieces. Before completing the assembly, do all the painting. There is a well-ventilated area. You can pull fumes out of the room by opening the window and using a window fan.You don't want to make a mess with the paint if you set up a sheet or cloth. After you've assembled the whole thing, you can stain or paint the bed.
Step 10: 2 pieces of plywood should be cut to 84 inches by 17 inches.
The bed frame is supported by these boards.Cut the boards the same as before.Make sure your boards are the correct length. The measurements are for a queen wall bed.Measure instead of using a kit or pre-made plan.If you have a lot of room to work, you might want to put the cabinet in the room you are putting the bed in.It's easier to transport the whole cabinet. If you have enough room, you should only work in the installation room.
Step 11: 2 more pieces of plywood should be cut by 17 in.
The horizontal supports of the cabinet are formed by these boards.Draw cutting lines on the wood with a straightedge and pencil. Then looked along the lines.
Step 12: Attach the pieces of plywood together.
You need to join the 4 boards together to form the cabinet. On its edge, lay one of the verticals. Then overlap the edge with one of the horizontal pieces.Attach the pieces using 2 screws through the horizontal piece. The other 2 boards should be done the same way.
Step 13: Paint.
If you want to decorate the cabinet, apply any stain or paint you like.Make sure you match the colors of the bed frame you painted. You should wear gloves and goggles while painting.Work in aventilated area or open a window in the room you are working in.
Step 14: The area you are going to install the bed in needs to be moved into the cabinet.
It's much easier with 2 people.Lift the cabinet with a partner and slide it on the floor.Stand the cabinet up on the wall while you install the bed.
Step 15: Attach the cabinet to the wall.
As close as possible to the wall, press the cabinet against it.There are 2 studs in the wall. The cabinet should be arranged so that the 2 studs are level.Put 1 L-bracket in the stud and the other into the top support of the cabinet.Do the same for the other L-bracket.Hardware stores and online have L-brackets.The stud width is usually 16 inches or 24 inches. If the studs in your wall are 16 inches apart, you can use the next stud to fit the L-brackets.
Step 16: Fasten the rotating brackets to the inside of the cabinet.
There are 4 holes for the cabinet in most rotating mechanisms. The piece should be held against the cabinet from the bottom to the front edge. Then drill a hole into the wood.Attach the bolts to the brackets with nuts. The other side of the cabinet needs to be done the same way.Make sure the bolts are secured with a wrench.Follow the directions on the product you use for hardware for Murphy beds.Depending on the kit you use, the rotation mechanism can be installed from the bottom.Follow the instructions to install the pieces.
Step 17: The mattress frame should be screwed to the rotating mechanism.
The mattress frame needs to be moved into the cabinet to line up with the rotating brackets.Line the frame up with the brackets on the sides of the cabinet.Use the brackets as guidance to drill into the frame.Attach the bolts from your kit with nuts. While you work, prop up the frame with wood. The frame will stay stable if you put the brackets on it.The instructions depend on the hardware kit you use.Follow the directions for installation.
Step 18: Attach the stand to the frame.
When the bed is in the down position, there is a stand that supports it.The stand should be on the footer of the mattress frame.Attach the stand with the bolts and nuts by drilling through the holes. If you want to see if the stand supports the weight of the mattress, let the bed stay in the down position. If you want to do a more realistic test, lay in the bed and make sure it holds the person's weight. When the stands are closed, some tuck under the mattress.Refer to your instruction manual for the correct storage position.
Step 19: The bed is kept closed by bolts through the cabinet.
Put someone else in charge of closing the bed.Just below the footer of the bed, drill a hole through the cabinet and mattress frame. The bed can be kept up while it is closed with the help of a 2 in bolt. The process should be repeated for the other side. It's a good idea to do this before you put a mattress on the bed.The bolts need to be removed so the bed doesn't fall down while you open it.
Step 20: There is a handle on the bed.
Pull the bed open with a handle.Put the handle down from the top of the cabinet to allow you to pull the bed down. The hardware kit may have a handle. To use as a makeshift handle, simply drill a piece of wood to the front of the cabinet. The shelves on the front of the cabinet can be used as handles. There is no need for a separate handle.
