Adding some personality to your shed can be accomplished with custom-made shed doors. To create a shed door, you'll need to get wood panelling or plywood and reinforce it with a wooden frame. If you do the right things, you can create a sturdy door for your shed.
Step 1: You can measure and mark the size of the door frame.
Measure from one side of the door frame to the other side and subtract 12 millimetres from each side. It's important that you have enough space to properly open the door.Write down the length and width of the door frame on a piece of paper. The shed doors will be between 25 and 45 inches wide and between 6 and 7 feet tall.
Step 2: Purchase material for the door.
You can either use T1-11 siding, which resembles wood panelling, or use plywood to build the door.Purchase bead boards, which are boards that interlock with one another. If you want the door to match the look of your structure, use a material that blends in with the siding on the shed.T1-11 siding and beadboards are very strong. You should get at least 1.5 inches of plywood.
Step 3: Purchase 3 1 by 4 inch boards for your frame.
Purchase boards that are as long as the door's height.Purchase boards that are a foot or 2 longer than the door height and cut them down later to make sure you have enough wood for the entire frame.
Step 4: The boards are 2.5 cm 20.3 cm.
The top and bottom of the frame will be acted on by these boards. The boards should be as long as the door's width.
Step 5: You can draw an outline of your door.
Measure and mark an area on your wood panelling that is in line with the measurements you took.As you cut the material to size, use a flat edge to draw the lines that will guide you.To make sure they are not on an angle, hold a level up against the lines.
Step 6: The material should be cut to size.
You can use a saw to cut along the lines. If you want more precise cuts, you can use a circular saw.If you are using interlocking beadboards, it is a good idea to cut the edges of the boards so that they are straight on the door.
Step 7: The boards must be cut to the height of the door.
Take your strips of wood and use a circular saw or handsaw to cut them to the height of your door.Cut out two pieces of wood and place them on the floor.
Step 8: Glue the strips to the door.
To apply wood glue, squeeze it in a back and forth motion.Put glue all the way down the length of the 1 by 4 inches boards, line them up with the right and left edge of a door, and lay them on top of it.Place the boards on the door's surface.
Step 9: Long screws are inserted into the frame.
To drive screws into the corners of the frame, use an electric screwdriver.Place 2 screws about.25 inches away from the edges of the frame.Continue down the length of the frame, spacing the screws 6 inches apart. The sides of the frame will be secured.
Step 10: The space between the two frames is measured.
Use a tape measure to record the space between the two frames. The space on the top and bottom of your door should be the same if you have squared everything up correctly.
Step 11: To fit in between the frame, cut a 1 by 8 inches board.
If you want to line up your frame with the side parts, you need to measure and mark a 1 by 8 inches. To cut a straight, draw a line. You can cut the piece of wood with a handsaw or electric saw.
Step 12: Glue the boards to the door.
Glue the back of the boards like you did with the side frame pieces.Line up the top of the board with the door if you press the boards in between the side frame. The process should be repeated on the bottom of the door.
Step 13: The boards have to be screwed in by 8 inches.
Place the screws in the corners of the board while the glue is still wet.The board should be secured with additional screws 6 inches apart.
Step 14: There is a board on the door.
The board that runs diagonal will help support your door and prevent it from being racked.Use a flat edge to draw lines on the board that line up with the edges of the frame on each end.You can cut the line from the diagonal board with this.
Step 15: To fit the outer frame, cut the board.
You can cut the edge with a handsaw or electric saw.The board should be able to fit on top of the door.
Step 16: Attach the diagonal board with glue and nail.
Attach the diagonal board to the door using glue and nail, repeat the process you used for the rest of the frame. The edges on the end of wood should be flush with the rest of the frame. The frame of your door will help keep it together.
Step 17: Take a look at where the hinges will go on your shed.
Use a tape measure to mark from the top of the door frame to the bottom. You can skip this step if you already have hinges on your shed.
Step 18: The hinges should be screwed into the shed with lag screws.
lag screws are put into the holes on the hinge and the frame. The hinges on your shed should be secured with this.
Step 19: Place the door up into the frame.
A friend can help you hold the door in place.Use a level to make sure the door is straight, then open the hinge to let it rest over the surface.Make sure the gap between the door and the frame of the shed is at least 12 millimetres.
Step 20: Attach the hinges to the door.
While your friend holds the door in place, you can use a screwdriver to drive lag screws through the holes in the top hinge. The process can be repeated with the bottom hinge.Make sure the screws are tight and that the door is secured to the frame.
Step 21: If it works, open and close your door.
You should have a door that can open and close. If the door is getting stuck on the frame when you try to open it, you may have to sand down the edges of it to make it smaller.
