The French drain is deep.The standard depth is about 12 inches.This will allow for about 5′′ above a drain pipe and 3′′ of top soil above that.

If there are humps or variability in the slope of the area being trenched, the depth may need to be increased.The pitch can be maintained throughout the entire length of the drain.
