Carrots are a healthy vegetable that can be easily added to a variety of dishes and can also be grown indoors. You can grow any type of carrot indoors. You only need a container, soil and seeds to grow carrots indoors. You can get awesome carrots after a few months if you keep them in a cool area with lots of sun.
Step 1: The container should be at least 20 cm deep.
A lot of depth is needed in order to grow carrots. To grow carrots in containers, they need to be at least 20 cm deep and 30 cm in diameter. If the container is large enough not to crowd the carrots while they are growing, it can be used to grow carrots. There are drainage holes in the bottom of each container. If the container has holes, you can use a drill to make them. The water can be caught on top of a saucer or tray.
Step 2: Purchase a soil mix for vegetables.
Use your hands or a shovel to fill each container. There is only 2.5 cm of space between the soil and the top of the container if you fill each container. If you want to grow carrots, you should not use soil from your garden outside. The potting soil mix should have a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.Carrots like soil that is light and sandy.
Step 3: You can put your containers in a cool area with 6 hours of sun.
In order to thrive, carrots prefer cool temperatures between 10 and 18 C.They need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.If you want to harvest your carrots in a few months, you need a place in your home that is regularly cool and has a lot of sunlight. When the temperatures change, carrots don't do well.If the temperature changes frequently, keep your carrots away from doors.
Step 4: If you don't get enough sunlight, grow lights are a good idea.
If you don't have a location in your home that gets 6 hours of sunlight per day, grow lights are an alternative. The carrots can be moved further from the lights once they start to grow if either the containers or lights are moved up and down.If you want your carrots to get at least 6 hours of light, leave the grow lights on for long every day.Grow lights are specialized bulbs that produce a light spectrum similar to that of the sun, which will interact with your carrot plants to help them grow.Grow lights can be purchased online or at a hardware store. You can either use grow lights or natural light. You don't have to remember when to turn on and off your grow light if you use a timer.
Step 5: Each container needs to be filled with a soil mix.
Potted soil mix is almost to the top of each container you want to sow carrots in.Only 1 inch of space is left at the top of each container. After filling the container, add some water to the soil.Add more soil until it is up to the proper level if the water causes the soil to compress. If there are any unique steps required, read the instructions on your bag of vegetable potting soil mix.If the soil becomes compressed as the carrots grow, use the leftover mix to top up the containers.
Step 6: Each container has carrot seeds.
Place the carrot seeds on top of the soil.Carrot seeds don't need to be buried. It may be difficult to tell how many seeds you have used because carrots are very small and hard to see.Sprinkle water on the seeds once they are in the container.A variety of carrots can be grown indoors. You can sow multiple varieties of carrot seeds in your containers. You can buy carrot seeds at a garden centre. The coating on the carrot seeds makes them larger and easier to see.
Step 7: Take care of your carrot seeds and watch them grow.
The carrots will take about 17 days to grow. While you wait for your seeds to grow, make sure they get at least 6 hours of light a day and keep the top layer of soil moist. To empty the saucers or trays of excess water, use a spray bottle.Continue to provide your carrots with adequate light and water after they have sprouted.
Step 8: To give each plant enough room to grow, thin out the sprout.
The carrots take about 17 days to grow.Once the carrots have sprouted, thin out the carrot sprout using scissors with a 2 in (1.3 cm) of space on all sides.Don't pull the unwanted sprouts out of the soil, cut them down to the ground. The chance to grow successfully is provided by this step. Some may die off before the next step.
Step 9: When the seedlings are 3 inches tall, repeat the process.
Thin the carrots out when the sprout have grown into 3 in seedlings.Make sure that each seedling has 1 inch of space around it on all sides. You can cut the seedlings down to the soil with your scissors. The bigger the carrot, the less the number of seedlings.
Step 10: Allow your harvest to last longer by sowing your seeds in intervals.
Carrots can take up to 75 days to mature. They can be eaten immediately after they mature. This may give you too many carrots at once.If you want to extend your harvest period, plant your containers in intervals instead of at the same time.If you want to plant 6 containers, you can sow seeds in 2 containers one week, then sow them in another two containers a week later. You will have planted your seeds over the course of 3 weeks.
Step 11: To keep the top layer of soil moist, water your carrots regularly.
The amount of soil in each container should be checked with your finger. It is time to water your carrots if the soil is dry.Give each container enough water to keep the top layer of soil moist. After it has been watered, excess water may drain from each container. As much as possible, empty the saucers and trays.
Step 12: Your carrots should beFertilized every 2 weeks to keep them healthy.
The instructions on the bottle say to add regular houseplant fertilization to each container of carrots every 2 weeks. The carrots will be given the proper nutrition to grow and mature. You don't need to buy special fertilizer for your carrots.Liquid houseplant fertilization can be purchased at a garden centre or in the plant section of a grocery store.
Step 13: Every plant should get enough sun by rotating each container weekly.
A quarter turn clockwise is what you should do at the same time every week. All carrot plants should get the same amount of sunlight. If you notice that your carrot plants are leaning towards the sun, you may want to rotate the container more frequently. You can skip this step if you use grow lights in addition to sunlight and they are located directly above the containers.
Step 14: After 60 to 75 days, enjoy your mature carrots.
Once your carrots are mature, harvest and enjoy them. The plants with the biggest and thickest greens will be the most mature.Pull the carrot up from the bottom of the greens. If your carrot doesn't want to come out easily, you may need to loosen the soil around the roots.
