You might think it's difficult to change your engine oil. It's much easier to have the right tools.
Step 1: You should read your Owners Manual.
Step 2: You need to change your oil every year or every 100 hours of use.
Step 3: Before starting, inspect your engine and check the oil.
Step 4: Before starting the motor, make sure the prop has been removed and that no people or pets are near the stern drive or prop.
Step 5: Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be prevented by checking for fuel or fuel vapors outside or in a well-ventilated area.
Step 6: Before you start, make sure you have a water supply.
Step 7: Be prepared for a spill.
Old towels or blankets can be used to cover the floor and cushions.
Step 8: Let your motor warm up.
This will make it easier to suck the oil out of the tube.
Step 9: The motor needs to be turned off.
After the engine has run long enough to reach operating temperature, turn the motor off and let it cool.
Step 10: Attach the oil hand pump to the end of the dipstick tube.
Attach the pumps wires to the battery if you are using an electric oil change bucket.
Step 11: Put your oil in a container.
Mer cruiser dipstick tubes are similar to oil withdraw tubes. The dipstick tube can be used to suck out the oil from the engine. This requires the use of either a small hand pump, which can be purchased online, or a more expensive Oil Changer Pump/Bucket Assembly from a marine supply store.
Step 12: The oil filter needs to be replaced.
Step 13: The old filter should be removed by using the correct filter wrench.
You can see it from the bottom end of the filter. The filter can be difficult to remove. When it was installed, it had been over-tightened.Sometimes you have to drive a large screwdriver through the body of the filter to get it off if you don't have a good wrench and patience.
Step 14: After the filter is removed, use a lint-free towel and inspect the mounting area.
Make sure the old filter has been removed from the engine.
Step 15: To make sure you have the correct type, compare the threaded hole of the new filter to the old one.
Step 16: Clean oil is used to coat the o ring.
Step 17: Put the new filter in place.
Step 18: The filter wrench can be used to tighten another quarter of a turn.
It's hard to remove the filter over tightening.
Step 19: Look up your engine oil capacity in the owner's manual.
4-5 quarts are what most inline 4 cylinder engines take.5 US quarts is the average for most V6 engines. The Big Block V8's can take up to seven quarts depending on the model.
Step 20: The correct amount of oil should be put in the engine.
Mer cruiser engines use a color coding system to locate and identify the oil fill cap and dipstick.Mer cruiser has yellow on it to identify oil service points.
Step 21: Before checking the level on the dipstick, let the motor sit for five minutes.
The new oil can be dripped all the way into the pan.
Step 22: The filter will hold some oil.
Step 23: After you have filled your tank, install your oil fill cap and perform a general inspection on the engine.
Make sure the filters have been installed and that the engine area has been cleared of rags and tools.
Step 24: Start the engine by giving the water supply to the motor.
Step 25: When the engine is running, inspect the oil filter.
Look for leaks.Go to the helm and look at your oil pressure gauge.
Step 26: The engine should warm up.
Step 27: Let the motor sit for 5 minutes.
Step 28: The manual for my mercruiser says to check the oil level at rest in the water.
Step 29: Check the oil level again after wiping off the dipstick.
Step 30: If needed, add more oil.
One quart adds a bit to the dipstick. This can vary from model to model.
