How To Color Code Labels in Gmail

You can learn how to organize your inbox with colorful labels using a computer.You can use Gmail's smart filters to color code messages based on certain criteria after setting up your color-coding system.There are no color-coding options in the mobile app, even though you can assign text labels to messages.

Step 1: Go to www.gmail.com to sign in.

You can use any web browser to create and assign labels to your emails.You will need a computer to use the mobile app.The colored labels you create and assign will show up in the inbox.The labels behave like folders.Clicking on a label in the Inbox menu will show you all of the corresponding messages.

Step 2: Click the gear.

Above the right corner of your inbox is it.A menu will expand.

Step 3: Click on the settings you want to modify.

It is in the middle of the menu.

Step 4: You can click on the Labels tab.

It is near the top-center part of the page.If you want to change the label color of an existing one, skip to step 6.The system labels are at the top of the page.You can find any labels you've created by scrolling down to the "Labels" section at the bottom of the page.

Step 5: Click to create a new label.

It is near the bottom of the page.

Step 6: Click on the label name to create it.

The label's name will appear on your message.The label name can be seen in the panel that runs along the left side of Gmail.If you want to nest this label under an existing label, you have to check the "Nest label Under" box.Select the label from the menu if you want to create a label called.

Step 7: There is a menu on the label name.

The left panel has the label at the bottom of the list.When you hover your mouse over the label's name, the three-dot menu appears.Click More to expand the rest of the option if you don't see the label.

Step 8: Click on the color you want.

It is at the top of the menu.The color panel is expanded.

Step 9: You can choose a color.

Click one of the existing colors, or add a custom color to your own.The icon that appears with the label name in the left column will change to reflect the color you chose.If you click Add custom color, you can choose a background color for the label in the left panel, a fonts color from the right panel and then apply it.

Step 10: You can select the message you want to label.

Step 11: Click on the icon.

The next-to-last icon above the inbox looks like a gift tag.

Step 12: You can choose your label.

The inbox has a colored label assigned to it.You can see the label at the top of the message.There will be assigned labels on your messages in the apps, but they won't be color-coded.You can repeat these steps if you want to add more labels.Click the X on the tag next to the subject to remove the label from a message.

Step 13: You can browse the messages by label.

Search for the label's name in the Search bar at the top of the screen if you want to quickly find those messages.Click the label's name in the Inbox menu on the left side of Gmail to see all messages with that label.

Step 14: Go to www.gmail.com to sign in.

Step 15: Click the gear.

Above the right corner of your inbox is it.A menu will be expanded.

Step 16: Click on the settings you want to modify.

Step 17: You can click on the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.

It is near the top-center part of the page.There are email filters that will appear here.

Step 18: If you want to create a new filter, click here.

There are blue links in the top section.To change an existing filter, click on it.

Step 19: You can add the label by selecting the criteria.

All messages that match the criteria you entered will be assigned a color-coded label.If you enter webmaster@wikihow.com into the "From" field, you can assign your pink label to all messages.You can assign the label to all messages from anyone with an "@wikihow.com" email address.You can enter webmaster@wikihow.com into the "From" and "Has the words" fields to assign the label to the messages.

Step 20: Click to create a filter.

There is a link at the bottom of the window.The button will say Continue if you're editing an existing filter.

Step 21: Next to the box is a label.

It's in the middle of the options list.

Step 22: Choose a label from the menu.

Clicking a label's name will add it to the filter.Clicking New Label will create a new label for you.You can use the steps in the "Creating Color-Coded Labels" method to assign its colors.

Step 23: The box tells you to apply the filter to matching conversations.

It is at the bottom of the options list.The messages which already match these criteria are color-coded correctly.

Step 24: You can create a filter.

The blue button is at the bottom of the window.The filter has been created.The filters will add color-coded labels to all new and existing messages.
