Step 2: Permanent markers or fabric markers are available.

All parts of the shoe will be marked with permanent markers. They will show up best against white Converse because they are translucent. The fabric part of the shoe is the only part that fabric markers can work on.They can be used on the rubber part. It's important to get the right fabric marker. You should get a fabric marker for dark or colored fabric if your shoe is colored. You can use any type of fabric marker if your shoe is white.

If you have white shoes, sketch lightly so that the pencil doesn't show through. If you have dark shoes, use a white colored pencil.

Step 5: The lightest colors first and the dark colors last in your design.

Depending on the type of marker you are using, you may need to wait for the ink to dry before moving onto the next color.Don't start with the dark colors. If you do, the ink will smudge and make the colors muddy. If you are using markers for colored fabrics, shake it first and then tap the tip on a flat surface. It will help get the ink into the felt tip.Don't do the tapping part on your shoes because the ink will gush out.

Step 6: If you want to add the outlines, wait until the ink is dry.

The outlines can help make your work stand out.Try to use thicker lines on the larger shapes.

Step 7: The shoe's fabric should be sprayed with a shoe sealant or a waterproof spray.

You can use spray-on.If you choose to use it, make sure that it is not shiny. This will help protect your work. You don't need to spray the rubber parts if you colored them. The rubber parts of the designs will wear off on their own, so keep that in mind.

Step 8: The laces need to be put back in before you can wear your shoes.

The work will still be delicate even with the seal.Try to keep your shoes dry.

Step 9: Finished.

Step 10: The rubber parts should be covered with masking tape.

The method only works on the fabric of the shoe. The rubber won't stick to the paint for long. You will need permanent markers to color the rubber parts. If you only paint the sides of the shoe, you don't have to remove the laces.

Step 11: Try to come up with a design on a sheet of paper or fabric.

It will be hard to get rid of any mistakes once you start painting. You can sketch out your design on a sheet of paper or a scrap of fabric, then color it with paint and paintbrushes.Cotton, linen, or canvas fabric gives you the best feel for what it's like to work on Converse.Paper can do in a pinch.Thin your paint out with some water if it's too thick.

This will make your colors last longer. Before you move on to the next step, make sure the paint primer is dry.If you are using fabric paint, you don't need primer.

Step 14: The largest shapes are the first to be colored in.

First, paint the edges and then fill in the shape.Wait until the paint dries to add any details. If you want to paint a bug red, you should paint the whole thing first. The spots should be added after the red paint has dried. Some colors, such as yellow, will need several coats before they show up.If you want the outline to be black, wait until the very end.Wait for the paint to dry and then paint over it if you make a mistake.

Step 19: Remove the laces and cover the rubber soles and toe with masking tape.

The rubber will not pick up the dye.If you want to dye the laces, you will need to take them out and dip them in the dye bath with the shoes. They will be able to dye more evenly.

Step 22: Put the shoes in the bucket.

If your shoes float to the top, you need to weigh them down. You can use jars, bottles, or sticks. They will float to the top if you do not do this. Some people find that soaking the shoes in warm water helps the dye soak in better. It can get messy with dye.If you want to protect your hands from getting stained, consider wearing plastic gloves.

Step 28: The shoes should be put in the dryer for 10 to 15 minutes.

The heat will help set the dye.If the shoes are still damp, it will help them finish drying.

Step 29: The laces need to be put back in.
