How To Convert Improper Fractions Into Mixed Numbers
In math, improper fractions are fractions where the numerator is bigger than the denominator. To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. You have a mixed fraction if you write the whole number answer next to a fraction with the remainder in the numerator and the original denominator.
Step 1: The numerator should be divided by the denominator.
Write your improper fraction. If you divide the numerator by the denominator, you can do the division problem that the fraction is already set up for.Don't forget to add the rest.Follow along with an example. We need to turn the fraction into a mixed number. The first thing we'll do is divide 7 by 5.
Step 2: Write the answer in its entirety.
The big number to the left of the fraction is the whole number answer of your division problem. The answer to the division problem should be written without the rest.Since our answer is 1 R2, we would leave off the rest and just write it down.
Step 3: The original denominator should be made a fraction from the rest.
We need to find the fraction of the mixed number. The remainder from your division problem should be put in the numerator. You have your mixed number if you put this fraction next to your whole number. Our remainder is 2 in our example. We get 2/6 if we put this over our original denominator. We put this next to our whole number answer to get our final mixed number.
Step 4: Add the whole number to the numerator to get back to proper fractions.
Mixed numbers are easy to read, but they are not always the best choice. If we convert the mixed number back into an improper fraction, our work will be much easier. To do this, add the whole number to the numerator. If we wanted to change the answer back to an improper fraction, we would do it this way.
Step 5: A mixed number can be converted to 11/4.
This problem is easy to solve. You can see a step-by-step solution. We need to divide the numerator by the denominator. We need to make a fraction from the remainder and our original denominator. That's 11/4
Step 6: 99/ 5 is a mixed number.
The process is exactly the same, even though we're dealing with a really big numerator. How many times do 5 go into 99?It's safe to say that 5 goes into 99 19 times. We put the mixed number together again.99/6
Step 7: 6/6 is a mixed number.
We've only dealt with improper fractions where the numerator is bigger than the denominator. When they're the same number, what happens? You can see below to find out.Six goes into six one time with no rest.1 R0 is 6 6.The numerator is always equal to zero so we don't need to put a fraction next to it.6/6 is the number
Step 8: You can convert 18/6 to a mixed number.
If the numerator is a multiple of the others, you don't have to bother with the rest.See below. We don't need to worry about the fraction part of our mixed number since we know that 18 is just 6 3.18/6 is the number
Step 9: A mixed number is -10/3.
Positive numbers work the same way as negative ones.See below for the R1 and -10/3 numbers.
