Sailors have always been fascinating people, sailing all over the world on a ship, fighting in wars, dealing with pirates, and seeing places some people only dream about.Due to the nature of their work, dating one can be difficult if you have little or no military experience.
Step 1: You should learn the language.
The Navy has its own version of the English language.Your sailor will use incomprehensible jargon because he or she is used to everyone understanding what they are talking about. If you don't know what your sailor is talking about, ask.
Step 2: You should have all of your sailor's email addresses.
Sailors use two email addresses - a navy one and a civilian one.The navy email address is used for work, but many commands do not allow personnel to check their civilian email accounts on government computers for security reasons. For a variety of reasons, your sailor may not be reachable by phone. It is easier to reach him or her by email if there is no reception or cell phones in certain buildings. This is true of ships. There is no cell phone reception inside the ship. The sailors on-board have no access to civilian email accounts when the ships get underway.
Step 3: Be flexible.
At short notice, your sailor's work schedule can change at random.Don't plan any surprise vacations. They aren't allowed to leave without an approved leave chit if they are more than 300 miles away.It would be terrible to spend time and money planning a trip only to find out that your other person can't go.Sailors have to stand every so many days.Sea duty to shore duty varies from command to command. The ship duty sections aren't allowed to leave the ship for 24 hours.Standing duty at a shore command is more relaxed.Just ask if you don't know what your sailor is talking about.
Step 4: Be patient.
"Hurry up and wait" is a saying in the Navy.It can take a long time to get anything done, much to the displeasure of your sailor.Sailors like to take leave in the military version of vacation days.Sailors get 30 leave days a year and emergency leave is deducted from that total if it is used. ill sailors are either hospitalized, put in bed rest or re-assigned to a duty they are able to perform.Sailors who have a negative leave balance can go "in the hole" and earn their leave back. The sailors have to request how many to use and when in order to get it approved. They have to get permission first. It takes as little as four days, but can take up to a couple of weeks. You will have to be patient with mail.Sending mail to a 'normal' address takes less time than sending it to the command of a ship.Send something to a ship that is deployed overseas, and it will reach its destination in a few months or more. It's not uncommon for a Christmas card to show up in March. When sending a care package to a sailor, keep that in mind.
Step 5: Understand.
For security reasons, your sailor may not be able to talk about his or her job or schedule.
Step 6: If your sailor is in a different part of the world than you are, write often.
If you feel like it.Emails from home are always welcome, even if you don't hear back from your sailor everyday.
Step 7: Proceed how you would normally date someone.
