The mouth can convey a lot of emotions, like happiness, sadness, excitement, and displeasure.Drawing mouths can be difficult since everyone's mouth is different, the right shapes to use depend on facial expression, and the shading can change based on the lighting.Once you learn how to draw a basic mouth, either closed or open with teeth showing, you will be able to make adjustments depending on who you are drawing or what expression you want to convey.
Step 1: Draw a line between the two lips.
This is where the upper lip meets the lower lip.The shape of this line is different for everyone, and it depends on what facial expression is being made. For resting facial expression, this line has a slight upward curve on each side and a dip in the middle. The dip should be the same length as the lines on the ends. The line should be as wide as you want it to be.
Step 2: The upper lip should be outlined.
Start at the left end of the first line, and then draw a line at an upward angle to the right. When you are above the halfway point on the first line, stop. The first line you drew should be repeated on the right end.The U shape should be drawn between the ends of the lines. The dip is in the upper lip.
Step 3: Take a picture of the lower lip.
Start at one end of the line. You should draw a line that stops at the other end of the line. The lower lip is larger than the upper lip.If you want the lower lip to be the same size as the upper lip, you can make it bigger.Make the U shaped line deeper to make the bottom lip bigger. To make it smaller, make the line deeper.
Step 4: There is a vertical crease on the lips.
If you look at someone's lips, you'll see they aren't perfect. As people age, the vertical crease in their lips gets more pronounced. The lines will be more visible in the lower lip. There are around 10 lines across the lower lip.If you repeat on the top lip, draw fewer lines and make them shorter, they will be less noticeable there. The lines on the left and right sides of the lips should curve out to the right. The lines should be relatively straight near the center of the lips.
Step 5: Shade the lips.
The right way to shade the lips depends on the lighting. The shadows will fall at the bottom of each lip if the lighting is above the face. One half of the lips would be darker if the light came from the other side. There wouldn't be many shadows for straight-on lighting. The upper and lower lips meet in the darkest part of the lips. The parts of the lips that stick out the most will be the middle and upper lip. These areas should be white.Adding highlights and shadows to the lips will make them look realistic.
Step 6: You can draw an outline of the mouth.
Draw a horizontal line with a shallow upward curve. As long as you want the width of the mouth to be, make this line. The upper lip will be at the bottom.Next, starting at one end of the line, draw a U shaped line that ends at the other end.You will be able to draw the teeth inside the mouth with the U shaped line.Take the length of the curved horizontal line and divide it by the distance between the lowest point on the U shaped line. The mouth will look like a banana.
Step 7: Take a picture of the upper lip.
Start at one end of the curved horizontal line, and draw a shallow downward-curving line that ends slightly above the halfway point. The 2 downward-curving lines meet in the middle when you repeat on the other side. The halfway point on the curved horizontal line is about 13 the height of the mouth.
Step 8: The lower lip should be outlined.
Start at one end of the curved horizontal line and draw a U shaped line that ends on the opposite end.You should leave a gap between this line and the first line you drew for the mouth. The further away you get from the beginning, the bigger the gap will be.Make the gap smaller until you reach the other side.Take the height of your mouth and divide it by the distance between the lowest point on this line and the first U shaped line.
Step 9: Draw a line across the length of the mouth.
Start by drawing a partial ellipse in the center of the mouth. The gums will go where the top of the rectangle is not drawn. The bottom edge should be parallel with the top of the lower lip.Make this one slightly taller by drawing another partial rectangle next to it.Continue this process until you have drawn the first tooth.Do the same thing on the other half of the mouth. The number of teeth on each half should be the same.
Step 10: The gums should be drawn above each tooth.
A shallow arcs over the tooth at the one end of the mouth. The peak of the arcs should line up with the upper lip.Continue for the rest of the teeth.
Step 11: There is a shade.
Adding shading will make your drawing look more realistic.Use a pencil to shade in the inner portion of the mouth, or the blank space under the teeth, as dark as you can. Then, put in a few shades lighter than that.
Step 12: The lips have a crease.
To make the lips look more realistic, draw a series of curved vertical lines across the length of each lip.The lines should start at the top of each lip and the bottom. The lines on the left and right half of the lips should curve out to the right.Make 10 on each lip crease.
Step 13: If you want to finish your drawing, shade your lips.
Shadows and highlights on the lips can be captured using shading and light.Shade the ends of the lips at the corners of their mouths. This shade is lighter than the inner mouth. If you leave the upper lip and the middle of the lower lip white, they will have the most highlights.
