If you have an existing pipe or conduit you can use it to carry wires.Trying to push something through the pipe will leave you frustrated.Pulling is the only way to go.How do you pull another wire through that pipe?
Step 1: Feed a small amount of light string into one end of the pipe.
Step 2: Attach the vacuum cleaner to the other end of the pipe.
To make the most use of the vacuum, seal the connection. The string should be pulled through the pipe by the vacuum..The end where the string is feeding into the pipe should be watched to make sure it doesn't get caught.Knowing how much string has been pulled in will help you know when to expect the string's exit. The appearance of the string will be determined by the vacuum at the end.A lot of string can be sucked into the vacuum cleaner if you don't.
Step 3: Pull the light string through the pipe by attaching a heavier string to the end and pulling it through manually.
Step 4: Attach your final wire or cable manually once the heavier rope has been pulled through the pipe.
If you need to pull more than one to three smaller wires, connect them in a way that the point of connection to the heavy string is not a bunch of wires folded over.It will be difficult to pull through the conduit. If you connect only one wire directly to the string, you can create loops in this wire 6 - 8 inches down the wire from the connection point.Wrap the first wire around any additional wires that slip into the loop.Wrap electrical tape around the string and rope just above the connection point and down to the last wrap of the wire. The result should look similar to the end of a pencil.
Step 5: Use a metal or fiberglass snake.
The strength and flexibility offered by a fish tape or snake will make pushing into the conduit much easier.Sometimes it can be used to pull new wires directly into the pipe.It is recommended that you use fiberglass instead of metal fish tapes and snakes.
