How To Fix a Bad Window Tinting Job on Your Car

If you don't clean the window thoroughly or smooth the tint down as you install it, there will be air bubbles and wrinkling. As the vehicle warms and cools in the sun and shade, the bubbles and wrinkling will appear after a few years. If you heating the area and pushing the mistakes towards the edge of the window, you can remove them from a tint job.You probably need to replace your tint if you can't smooth the mistakes out.

Step 1: Rent a heat gun to melt the glue and loosen the tint.

Purchase a heat gun or rent one at a construction supply store. If you want to remove air bubbles, you have to push the mistakes out with the tint. You can not do this with a blow dryer because it doesn't get hot enough to melt the glue.It is possible to buy a heat gun for less than $60.You can rent one from your local construction supply store for $10-15.

Step 2: On high heat, heat the area around the bubble for 3-6 seconds.

This can be done on the outside of the window. To set your heat gun to the highest setting, turn the dial or press the button. The heat gun should be held 3–6 inches away from the bubble. The gun should be moved in a circular motion around the bubble or crease. You can't touch the tint for more than a few seconds. After you have heated the glass, keep your hands off of it.Don't heat the window from the outside. If you do this, your window tint will be damaged. If the mistake is in the middle of the window, heat it up.The heat gun should be slightly closer to the middle of the window if it is less than 3–4 inches from the edge.If you heat it directly, the heat gun will melt the plastic around the window.

Step 3: Use a plastic razor to make sure the mistakes don't get to the edge of the window.

You can get a plastic razor or old gift card.To get to the other side of the window, you have to open the vehicle door.Hold the plastic straight edge with the longest side towards the window. To push the edge towards the window, drag it at a 25- to 35- degree angle over the bubble, wrinkle, or crease. For 30 seconds, do this to make up for the mistake. The problem can be pushed to the top, bottom, or sides of the window. It doesn't matter.Pick the edge that is closest to the mistake.Hold the straight edge parallel to the line in the tint.If the bubble isn't moving, heat it for another few seconds.

Step 4: When the bubble stops moving, heat the area.

It may take several rounds of heating and smoothing to get rid of the mistake. When the crease stops getting hard to move with your straight edge, go back outside of the door and repeat the process for another few seconds.

Step 5: Continue smoothing out the mistake until you push it over the edge.

Pick up your plastic straight edge after you open the door again. If you drag the plastic edge over the mistake, you can push it to the edge of the window.Continue this process until your tint is uniform. If the mistake is so bad that you can't get it to the edge of the window, you might need to replace the tint. You should repeat this process for all of the bubbles.

Step 6: If there is debris, replace the tint.

You won't be able to fix it if you can see hair, dust, or something else trapped between the tint and the window.Mistakes and air bubbles will be too stubborn to be removed. The tint on the window can be replaced. If a shop installs your tint and there are visible mistakes, they will usually fix it for free.

Step 7: It is a good idea to take your car outside when it is warm.

You can use the sun to remove tint if it is hotter than 65 F.You can either park your car on the street or drive it out into the driveway. If you are replacing the tint yourself, you may want to remove it to save money. If you are going to pay a professional to replace the tint, you can always take your vehicle to them and ask them to remove it.If you do it yourself, you can save yourself up to $30 in labor.

Step 8: The inside of the window should be sprayed with a glass cleaner.

There is a spray for glass cleaning. You can tint your vehicle by spraying it with your glass cleaner. To get the window soapy and wet, soak the tint. The glass cleaner will not damage the interior. You can clean them with a cloth.

Step 9: Use a black trash bag to cover the inside of the window.

There is a black trash bag or a sheet of black plastic. The black plastic should be spread over the inside of the window.Push the plastic against the glass with your hand. The window cleaner will stick to the plastic. The plastic should cover every section.

Step 10: Allow the tint to bake in the sun for 20 to 45 minutes after closing the door.

The trash bag should stick out from the sides of the door.If it is 80 F or hotter, let the vehicle sit in the sun for 20 minutes.Wait a bit longer if it is on the cooler side. The plastic protects the window from the sun's heat. It's easy to remove the plastic when the glue sits out on the sun.The same effect can be achieved with a heat gun, but this is much safer for your vehicle.

Step 11: Remove the film from the window with one sheet.

After the vehicle has sat out in the sun for a while or after you heated it with the heat gun, open the door and remove the black plastic bag from the window. The tint was wrinkled in the sun.If it did, you can peel the tint off by grabbing awrinkle near the edge of the window. If you can't do it by hand, use a metal straight edge, like a razor blade, to peel the tint off.

Step 12: The tint on your vehicle needs to be replaced by a pro.

You can either go back to the shop where you got the tint or look up a tint shop in your area. You can replace your window by taking your vehicle to the professionals. This is the best way to make sure you don't end up with a bad tint job.It will cost less to replace a single window than to tint an entire vehicle.

Step 13: You tint job.

You already know what you are doing if you installed the tint on your own.Your main mistake was not cleaning your window enough or smoothing out the tint with your straight edge. You should spend an extra 10 minutes cleaning the window with soapy water and an additional 15 minutes smoothing it out when you install the tint.It is difficult to tint a vehicle. If your first attempt to tint your windows didn't work out, you probably have enough practice to do it again.
