I own a riding mower. It stops working after about 15 minutes of cutting.I have to replenish the battery.I had the starter rebuilt, the battery, ignition switch, and seat wiring replaced.Any suggestions? The part called "Protection Wire loop" is helpful. If your model has a full blown alternator, you can use this to send one half of the a/c electrical signal back to the battery. It's a simple way to get "dc" voltage from an ac source. The battery can't be charged if the diode is bad.If you look at a wiring diagram for your mower, it will probably be labeled "Charging System Output."It may even state the rating. It's a cheap part and can be ordered online for a few bucks. It's easy to check for a fix.The part number was 1N5404.Hope that helps.Good luck. Was this helpful? In my previous answer I thought they were using the starter. This is incorrect. The overhead flywheel has a stator. The problem is still likely to be the diode issue. My mower had a wire harness on the back of the engine. There is a wire under the left side of the engine.Just before it joins into the main harness, open the wire harness. You will find it in a wire. The diode starts the split so that one wire runs the lights and the other goes to charge the battery.I apologize for the misinformation that the diode will fall apart.I was surprised that ThriftyFun didn't allow for editing of one's own post.Corrected information can help someone. Was this helpful?Would a bad diodes explain the stalling? Was this helpful?I think I have a ranchero that won't hold a charge on the battery while it's running. Was this helpful?Kevins small engine is in South Berwick ME.I believe you will find that your alternator is not keeping the battery charged as it discharges. The mowing blades consume 3 to 5 Amps when they are engaged. There isn't enough electrical power to hold the electronic fuel shutoff. The fuel will be blocked from entering the engine. If your headlights run with 1156 bulbs, they draw 28 watt x 2.Let's call it 60 watt.60 divided buy 12 is a 5 Amp draw.A fully charged battery has a 25 Amp hour rating. When you factor in a 75 Amp draw to start the engine, the fuel solenoid doesn't have enough power to keep it open after 30 minutes. To verify, you need to start the engine, run it for a bit, and take the voltage reading at the battery terminals. If the voltage is charged correctly, it should be 13.6-14.2 volts.A bad connection in the red wire exiting the voltage regulator is the most likely reason for it staying at 12 volts. If the unit is still not charging, remove the red wire and replace the regulator. Was this helpful? To stop the battery from discharging when not in use, install a switch on the ground wire of the negative post and turn it off when the mower isn't being used.Yes, answer this question...
