I bought a car. There is a hole in the exhaust.I think it's flex pipe. The old owner said he has been driving it that way for a while. It's really loud. Will it cause a fire?I don't know if the damage has already been done, so I will replace with magnaflow cat. There is no check engine light and it does not misfire.I worry.
Most of the time the answer is "no".Check the other answers as well, because I wrote an answer about burnt valves here. Most of the time, burnt valves are caused by the valve not being sealed correctly. The idea of reduced back pressure in the exhaust system allowing unburnt fuel past the valve is what causes an exhaust leak. This is not true. There is still pressure in the system.Even engines with no burnt valves and straight single pipe per cylinder still have less exhaust restriction than you are experiencing from your exhaust leak.Get it fixed as soon as possible.CO poisoning can be caused by exhaust gasses coming up into your passenger cabin.
