How to fix a pool vacuum that is not moving
The Hayward Navigator is a common pool cleaner.Sometimes the parts fail and need to be replaced.
You like to save money if you are like me.Many pool stores will repair these cleaners with no labor costs, but if you order the parts online and fix it yourself, you could save at least 50% or more.
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to fix it.There isn't much to it if you read through the article and refer to the photos.
If your navigator seems to spin around in circles without really going anywhere, if it doesn't really move at all, or if you've owned it for a while, you probably already know that something may have gotten stuck in the unit. You have to pull it out. This problem accounts for half of the calls I get.
Take the unit out of the pool and look for the four pads that allow the cleaner to grip to the surface. They will need to be replaced if they are worn down too much.
The A-Frame is inside the navigator, but I can usually tell if it's a bad idea. The A-Frame is likely to be the problem if there is a lot of play when you move thepods back and forth. The A-Frame is the most common repair I make on these cleaners.Unless they are cracked or broken, thepods are usually not bad.The turbine, bearings, and gear box are part of the other parts.
It's not often that the gearbox needs to be replaced. This is an easy part to replace if it does.Pull out the old one and replace it with a new one.
It is just a matter of re-assembling the unit after the parts have been replaced. It is not difficult since there are not many screws to remove. It is ready to go back into the water and clean your pool if all was done right.

The Navigator is sucking but not moving around the pool. Why is this happening?
If there is something broken, it should be under warranty. When the pods are not on the bottom, do they move back and forth? When the turbine is new, I would check for any obstructions, such as a rock or large leaf.Does the pool pump have enough suction? It will not move much if there is not enough suction.
I replaced the A-frame and turbine kit because my pool vac was not moving. It is only in one section of the pool now.It always goes back to the same section whenever I move it.I replaced the gear box and medium turbine spindle gear last year.Do you have any ideas?
Thepods might need to be replaced. The A-frame can become loose over time, allowing for a lot of movement. They should be snug.Make sure the rubber shoes are not worn down.
What parts of my pool vacuum are new and what parts are old?The Navigator is suspended. The action stops if the Navigator is placed at the bottom of the pool.Do you have any ideas?
The only suggestion I would have is to make sure there is enough room for the cleaner to fit through. If you have a separate cleaner line, you need to close the main drain valve and the skimmer valve at the same time. The system has plenty of flow if the filter is clean. It will work better if there is more suction on the cleaner. The article explains how the valves should be set.
I usually use a flat screw driver and wd-40 to remove the Pod if it is difficult to do.
There is a person named Rob Tron. These are the kind of comments I like to see.It worked out well for me.Thank you for reading!
Thank you so much!Your guide was helpful.I bought new shoes because they were old.It was so common to see it fail that I ordered an A-Frame.Since I took the old one out, I was able to turn 2 of the wheels by hand, but not smoothly. The 4th wheel lost all of its ball bearings, so it was just a piece of plastic dangling on the axle.I put the cleaner back in the pool after replacing everything.I saved a lot of money by buying just a few replacement parts.
Gary, make sure there is enough air on the cleaner line. There should be no breaks or leaks in the hose sections.
Everything on my navigator has been replaced. When I put it in the water it won't turn, but it will spin at the house connection.Everything else is working well.
I would like to know if the house can cause a problem for the navigator.Thank you.
Tom.Thanks!I enjoy comments like yours. It worked well for you.I don't think I have replaced a gear box, it is usually one of the things you replaced. It should last for a few years for you.
It gave me the courage to attempt the repair. The turbine, wings, and A frame had to be replaced. It works like new.
Please post questions under that platform but also feel free to leave comments here. The parts you replaced should last a long time. It's hard to say without being able to check out the cleaner. Is it a gear box?Maybe. There are a lot of issues that could cause it to spin.Check the shoes andpods.
I replaced the inner parts and it worked for a few months, but now it gets stuck. The main plastic gear that the hose hooks up to gets stuck and will move a little bit in one direction but not the other, I think the main gear is worn out.Any thoughts?
Hello, Rebecca. All four should be replaced. They can be purchased on Amazon. You will pay 4 times as much if you go to a local pool supply store.
The feet on my Hayward are worn down and the back ones are missing.I don't know where to get theses or if I have to replace them all.
