If you live in an older home like we do, you may be exposed to a toxic chemical in a place that is easily accessible to your children.

It's highly likely that lead paint was used in your home if it was built before 1978.Lead paint that is in good condition is usually not hazardous.

Windows are prone to cracking and chipping paint because of opening and closing them, exposure to outdoor air, and lead paint chips being released into the air in your home.Children are exposed to lead based paint when they play or look out the window.

For children whose brains and bodies are still developing, and for pregnant women whose exposure can affect their baby's development, lead is especially dangerous.Source.

This is an issue that scares and overwhelms me, and that we have yet to take action on in our home.I have assumed that the paint is not lead based because I can see several layers of paint on the windows that are chipping. My son's levels came back within the normal range after he was tested for lead. For the health and safety of our family, we need to take some action.

If you are concerned that your home has lead paint, you can purchase a at home lead testing kit, but be aware that these kits are not 100% accurate, and cannot test for lead below a certain level. If you suspect that you have lead paint in your home, and/or your at home test comes back positive for lead, the best thing to do is hire a certified lead testing and removal service.

EPA Lead-Safe certified contractors can reduce the risk of lead exposure with safe working practices and thorough clean up, which is why it is important to think about lead paint before doing any remodeling or renovations.

Keeping your home well-maintained and dealing with any peeling or cracking paint is the best way to minimize your family's exposure to lead paint. The EPA has a lead poisoning site.

We will be getting a home test kit this weekend to start testing our home for lead.

Please let us know about your experience.Have you ever tested your home for lead paint? How have you dealt with the lead paint in your home?

This issue has been on my mind a lot in the past.We bought a house in December. The paint seemed to be in good shape. The former homeowners had to have at least one window per room because some of the windows were painted shut. They used a crowbar to chip the paint from the frames. When we moved in, we had a 2 year old and there were paint chips on the sills.

I did some research and feel better about the situation.Although lead paint was banned in 1978, it was phased out much earlier than that.My dad, who worked in the paint department of a major store, said that by the early 60s people were using latex paint.Prior to latex, they used oil and lead.It was difficult to use lead paint in the mid-century.

We can see bare wood in our house because there is only one coat of paint on all the trim. The trend of painting woodwork white was not popular until the late 1970s, early 1980s.It wasn't considered good sense prior to that.We can tell the paint on our window is new by looking at it.The paint was greenish and chalky. It wasn't like the rainbow of colors we have today.

Testing is the sure fire way to make sure there is no lead in your paint.I would not do any remodeling if I did not have an expert check for lead.It isn't worth it.I am reassured that if there is any lead paint in our house, it might be on the walls, which have been painted over at least a dozen times.A lot of this depends on when a house was built.

I live in an old Chicago apartment and have a baby girl. Our apartment has been painted over and over again.I think it is time to test.Thank you for this post.
