How to get rid of the noise in the fireplace?

The Home Wizard app calculates your ideal home care program to avoid problems with your Fireplace, but sometimes trouble can still occur. There are answers to questions about fireplace noises.

I have fireplaces. One of them is odd. There is a whooshing sound when I light the pilot light. You can hear it in the entire room. How can this be toned down? The gas fireplace pilot light is loud enough to be heard in the entire room.My other fireplace is the same model and manufacturer. Is something wrong?Something bent?Something that can be adjusted??

There are a couple of reasons why if you have two gas fireplaces that are the same make and model, that one unit's pilot light could sound louder than the other. The louder your unit, the higher it may be adjusted. You can check with your manufacturer to see if the pilot light can be adjusted to amplify the sound from the fireplace. Is one unit installed in a corner, or the other in the middle of the wall? The units are mounted to the wall. What is next to the fireplace? Is it bookshelves, or just walls? If both fireplaces are in the same house, it is most likely that they both have the exact same gas pressure, but if the line pressure for one unit's pilot was different than the other, then this could be a cause of one pilot being louder.

I'm very appreciative of your response. It's kind of like that, you have to be there to understand things. The middle of the wall is where the room is located. The square footage is a little different, with 250ft in the room with no noise and 200ft with noise. The diff in sound is not caused by the difference in sq ft.You can't hear the pilot sitting on the fireplace, but you can hear him sitting across the room.It is loud.It is weird that I am a remodeling contractor. It sounds like a gas torch went off.I will try to get in touch with the manufacturer.Someone will be able to tell if there is an adjustment screw.Finding a label for the manufacturer is a problem.Thank you.

The differences in the two rooms don't seem to warrant such a dramatic difference in noise level.Check with the manufacturer to see if your unit has an adjustment screw for the pilot light. You can confirm with the manufacturer that the pilot adjustment is a problem and not something else.

Whenever my gas fireplace is on, it makes a small noise. It is getting a little more gas in one spot. The fireplace was not working when we looked at the house to purchase, so we bought it just before it was serviced.I need to know why this is happening before I call a repair man.How safe is it to use my unit?I'm not sure if this is related but my gas oven burns hotter at the back of the oven than in the front.I would like to have someone look at that as well.

Is your fireplace powered by propane or natural gas?If you run on propane and your gas fireplace makes a small "poof" every once in a while, it's probably due to slight discrepancies in the gas supply, and should not be a problem. If you are referring to it making the "poof" sound when it first comes on, then it could be caused by a small ember blocking your pilot light, causing a delayed ignition problem. The pilot light area needs to be cleaned out to correct this.If you don't already have them, you might want to put two oven thermometers in your oven, one in the front and the back, to help you get to know your new gas oven.

Thank you for your quick reply.I use natural gas for both the fireplace and the oven. After the fireplace has been on for a while, the poofing begins and lasts the entire time it's on.Is that due to the gas supply being irregular or something else?Do I call the gas company or the repair man?The glass is very dirty even though it was cleaned less than 6 months ago and has only been used 5 or 6 times since then. The pilot light has been on for the entire time. After daily use, my last fireplace did not get dirty.I have a poofing problem.

I would say that your sooting and "poofing" are likely caused by your gas fireplace being out of adjustment, which is causing the fuel-air mixture of gas to build up, and that you are running natural gas. When incomplete combustion occurs, soot is produced.Carbon particles are produced when the flame does not burn efficiently. If the flames in your fireplace are more yellow than blue, it's a good sign that you have a gas fireplace. If you want to be on the very safe side, I would not recommend running your gas fireplace until it is adjusted.

A few months ago we had a new ventless gas log system installed in our fireplace. We have enjoyed it.We have been using it for a while.A few loud clicking noises can be heard a minute after the shutoff. If you are reading a book, some noises can make you jump.Should I get someone to come and look at it for some sort of repair, or is this just expansion/contraction of the steel? The last two weeks the gas logs made noises. Thanks a lot for any help with this! We're confused.

A gas log system that makes a clicking sound when the burner is lit or turned off is usually caused by the metal shell around the gas logs contracting as it cools down.If the noise is excessive, you will want to contact a qualified service technician. I'm wondering if clicking sound that you are hearing could be the ignitor relighting the pilot, which somehow is getting blown out when your unit shuts off?If the sound you are hearing is normal cooling/contraction noises, I would have expected you to have been hearing it from the beginning.

We have a fireplace with a thermostat. When it turns off, it has a poof.We wonder if it is getting enough air or not.We had a service man install a new blower a few months ago and he adjusted the air flow, but since then we have had an issue.I can't seem to get it right when I try to adjust the air.I don't know if I need more or less air.

Is your gas fireplace on propane or natural gas?If you run on propane and your gas fireplace makes a small "poof" every once in a while, it's probably due to slight discrepancies in the gas supply, and should not be a problem. If you are referring to it making the "poof" sound when it first comes on, then it could be caused by a small ember blocking your pilot light, causing a delayed ignition problem. To correct this, the pilot light area needs to be cleaned out, as always, we recommend a trained service person who can inspect your unit and who has been trained to work on your particular model of gas fireplace.

The poof is when the fireplace turns off.I don't know if it needs more air or less air, but I think it's in the air adjustment. The air flow was adjusted by the service person and it's been poofing ever since.

It's odd that you get the poof when you turn your fireplace off.If the service tech adjusted the air flow by adjusting the damper position in the flue stack, it would require more than just changing the knobs from the front of the unit.

The propane fire place poofs seem to be irregular in the gas line. It's all the time, like every 5 to 10 seconds. This could be a problem for the regulators.Or something else? Its annoying.

Jake thinks something is wrong with the fireplace. It could be a number of different causes, and to diagnose the problem it requires a physical inspection and testing of your system.

When the gas ignites, my fireplace comes on with a loud bang.I've had it serviced twice for the same problem and it still exists.Suggestions as to what might be causing this problem.I'm afraid it will blow the glass out.

We strongly recommend that you not use your gas fireplace until a qualified service technician has done a full inspection and made the appropriate repairs or adjustments to your unit. When you ignite it, it should not be making a loud noise. It's not possible to say what it is without doing a physical inspection of the unit.Someone has looked at your unit before. They may be very qualified, but I would suggest that you contact the manufacturer of your unit, and ask if they can provide a list of qualified technicians in your area, for your particular gas fireplace.

There is a new vent-free gas log set.The pilot light and gas make loud noises when the logs are lit. When you turn the flame down, the gas sound is even louder. The loud gas sound could be caused by something.

I would suggest that you have a professional inspect your gas log fireplace. The flow to your pilot light may need to be adjusted downward, and the size of your fireplace lines may not be correct. You need to have someone who can come out and inspect your fireplace.
