Plexiglas is a strong, transparent plastic with various uses. You will need a special type of glue called methylene chloride to bond two pieces because it is transparent and needs to perform well in high-stress applications. The methylene chloride is a type of solvent cement that works by melting the acrylic.
Step 1: The workspace should be solid.
The workspace should be made of wood, metal, or concrete.Grass and paper are not good choices as the Plexiglas can adhere to them.
Step 2: The Plexiglas can be cut.
Cut the pieces to the size and shape that you want them to be.If you want to cut thicker glass with a table saw, it's best to use a quarter inch.Pieces that are thinner than this can be scored with a utility knife and snapped apart, but only along straight lines. If your cut edges are rough, sand and polish them to make sure you have a smooth edge on which to apply glue.If applicable, remove the protective film after cutting it.
Step 3: The Plexiglas needs to be cleaned.
If you want to join the glass, you need to clean the pieces with soap and water.Don't rub, or you may scratch the surface, after cleaning and rinsing the pieces, blot them dry with a clean cloth.Ipsen alcohol can be used to clean glass.
Step 4: Glue the glass in place.
As they will be joined, fit the pieces together once you have cleaned them.Ensure a snug fit and secure the pieces with masking tape.
Step 5: Put glue on the joint.
The glue must be applied with a needle because it is water-thin and works by melting the acrylic to bond two pieces together. If you want to apply a small amount of methylene chloride to the joint between the two glass pieces, you can use a 25 gauge syringe.Gloves and safety glasses are required when applying methylene chloride.Do not press the pieces together if you apply the solvent cement separately. The method will make a weaker joint and increase the risk of drips. They will destroy any glass they touch.
Step 6: Allow the glue to dry.
Allow the glue to set for 48 hours to ensure a bond. You can remove the tape that held the pieces of the glass together.
Step 7: The joint should be smooth.
Allow the glue to set completely, then use a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough patches. When you are done sanding, wash the glass with soap and water.
Step 8: To make sure the joint is strong, check it.
If the glass will be used to hold water, you should check your joint for leaks.Check for leaks by running water over the joint or putting the piece in the water.Apply additional glue to the joint if the glass leaks.
