How To Grow Spiritually

Regular prayer and attendance at religious services can help spur spiritual growth. You can develop your relationship with your own spirituality by increasing your awareness, thinking about the natural world and works of art, and making things of beauty.Good works for others is one way to move beyond yourself.

Step 1: Meditate.

Increasing your concentration and detaching from the worries of your daily life will help you grow as a person. You can meditate by yourself or in a group.A silent meditation retreat is a great way to deepen your commitment to spiritual introspection. You can improve your body and mind by taking a yoga and meditation course.

Step 2: Don't forget to connect with the natural world.

You can go on long hikes or short walks.Don't look at your phone unless you have headphones in.Take in the world around you.Take a trip to the mountains, desert, and sea.Listen to the quiet, take breaks, and observe.Give thanks for the world you live in as you explore. If you are moved, sing a song or recite a poem.Longer periods in the wilderness can be had on camping trips.Hike with people interested in spiritual development.

Step 3: Take in works of art.

You can deepen your relationship with sacred images and great works of art if you are on an independent spiritual journey or belong to a faith tradition that believes in visual beauty.Visit mosques, churches, temples, and other places of worship that are known for their architecture. There are great works of religious and secular art in the museums.Classical and contemporary music moves you.You can read spiritual poetry by poets like John Donne. It isn't going to be a religious artwork that will bring you closer to God.Take time to think about a work of art.If you can, come back to it.

Step 4: Take part in creative acts.

Creative expression can help you understand your faith.Creativity brings you closer to the present because it helps you imagine that which cannot be understood.Secular spirituality and faith traditions often use music as a form of devotional expression. You can learn to sing with your family or alone. In many cultures, dance is a form of worship.Try to move to music that makes you feel spiritual and take a dance class.Baking is a traditional domestic activity that makes you feel centered and peaceful.

Step 5: Attend services.

Some religious centers share some of your beliefs.Renew your engagement with a congregation if you already belong to it.You can volunteer your time, join a committee for a cause you believe in, and connect with other members of the congregation. You should consider attending religious services outside of your own congregation.Get to know other spiritual traditions.

Step 6: Please pray.

Improve the quality of your prayers if your spiritual practice involves prayer. At least once a day.Don't let your mind wander when you pray.Don't think about the words you are saying. If you notice your mind wanders, remember what you're doing and resume with a renewed sense of purpose.Pray for others.See if your congregation has a prayer group.Consider praying with another congregation if not.If your family prays together at meals, you should lead the prayers one night.Prayers shape your mind and sense of oneness with the world.

Step 7: You can read core texts.

Understand the core beliefs of your faith tradition.Seek to understand the central messages of your spiritual ancestors by reading directly from the source. You can join a reading group to share your journey. You may join a Bible study group if you are a Christian. You can read texts from many faiths if you are interested in spirituality.

Step 8: People who would like to volunteer.

You can develop yourself by focusing on others.Donate your spare time to a cause you care about. If you want to start your own volunteer group, look at the local organizations that could use volunteers. There are many ways to help others. You can volunteer at a homeless shelter, teach free classes to immigrants, and help other workers in your field.

Step 9: Practice gratitude.

Take note of the good things others do for you.To those who help you, be grateful.People should be thanked when they do something for you.Explain how their actions have benefited you.You should keep a gratitude journal in which you write a few things you are grateful for.You get a good feeling when you do good for others.Feel appreciated for being a part of their lives.

Step 10: Impartiality can be developed.

It seems like an inherent quality, but it's actually a practice you can develop.Close attention to others is needed to develop your empathy.Do your best to understand how they are feeling. It's possible to do this for people in your immediate vicinity and people you read about in the paper. When you're talking, listen hard.Take it seriously, and don't just nod and answer.Get to know people. If they seem interested in talking, make friendly conversation with them.Try to understand what makes them happy. You should challenge your assumptions about others. If you harbor ill feelings towards any group or individual, you should try to get to know them as people.
