The seventh article in the builder tips series was introduced by the engineered wood association.
The materials Plywood and OSB are used for are ideal for roofing systems.
A roof system protects the home. The deck is one of those elements. Most of the time, it is composed of wood in the U.S.OSB is lightweight, inexpensive, and strong enough to resist bending if someone walks on the roof.In cases where the roof covering is heavier, such as for slate, clay, or concrete tile roofs, plywood is usually the better choice.
This can be accomplished with a straight piece of lumber or a long carpenter's level. To provide a level nailing surface, the rafters should be shimmed.Blocks should be installed if the rafters are warped or bowed.
Fasten panels with a minimum of 8d Common nails spacing a maximum of 6 inches on the center at supported panel ends and edges. The panels are fastened on the center of the intermediate supports.More bolts may be required in high-wind areas. The bolts should be from the ends of the panel to the edges.
Installation of panels with the non-skid surface up is recommended.
4.Start at the panel edge. You can use a chalk line or straight edge.Continue this sequence along the length of the panel by fastening panels in rows across the width. The procedure keeps stress out of panels.
5.Stand on the panel to ensure contact with the framing while driving. The panel should be flush with the bolts.Stand between the framing and the panel.
6.For improved performance, consider thicker roof panels, panel edge clips, or panels with tongue-and-groove edges.
7.Unless the panel manufacturer indicates otherwise, a 1/6-inch space between adjacent panel end and edge joints is recommended. There are requirements for installation of panel edge clips. The relationship of the panel rating to the actual distance between roof framing is what determines the edge clip requirements.
To gauge the edge and end spacing of the panels, use a 10d box. Some manufacturers have spacer-type panel edge clips. The trim panel ends to the center of the frame.
If the manufacturer recommends it, cover the sheathing with felt to minimize exposure to weather.
Check roofing manufacturer's recommendations if delays are anticipated and use shingle underlayment felt conforming to the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials. Before installing asphalt or fiberglass shingles, flatten the surface of the shingle underlayment.
