There are rugs in every room of the house. There is no guarantee that you will find the perfect rug in a store. It is easy to make a rag rug. There are many ways to make a rug. They are all eco-friendly.
Step 1: There is a rubber rug mat.
People put a rubber mesh-like mat under rugs to keep them from slipping. They can be found in an art store or in the home-improvement section of a store.
Step 2: Cut the mat in half.
You will need to cut your mats down to the right size because they come in rolls. You can make a rug that is square or rectangular. You can cut it into a shape, such as a crescent moon or heart.
Step 3: Attach your fabric to thin strips.
Stack several pieces of cotton fabric together and cut them into strips. Two or three colors will make your rug look more interesting.Use one solid color and one coordinating pattern. The fabric strips will be cut faster with the use of a rotary cutter.
Step 4: Pull the fabric strip through the holes.
Pull the fabric strip through one hole and out the other with a pair of tweezers.Make sure that the strip crosses under the corner between the two squares.
Step 5: If you want, tie the two ends of the strip together.
You don't have to do this, but it will make your rug more durable and prevent the strips from falling out.
Step 6: When the rug is filled, repeat the process for the rest of the holes and strips.
Work your way from one end of the rug to the other. If you want to make a heart shape, start at the center of the rug and work your way outward.
Step 7: You can choose fabric to use as your base or scraps.
Your base fabric should be cut to the size and shape you want it to be.You can use a towel or canvas for this.Pick something that doesn't scratch much, such as cotton or jersey.Take a moment to make sure your base fabric is hemmed. You don't have to match your scrap fabric.Try using coordinating patterns and colors.
Step 8: Set your base fabric aside after drawing parallel guidelines on it.
The lines should go across the width of the fabric. The closer you make these lines, the denser your rug will be; keep in mind that you'll also need to use more fabric as well.It would be a good place to start. This can be accomplished with a dressmaker's pen and a ruler. When you wash the fabric, the lines will disappear.Draw rings inside the rug, like ripples, instead of making a round rug.Guidelines should not be drawn on your scrap fabric.
Step 9: Cut your scraps into small squares.
You will make a shaggy rug by sewing these onto a larger piece of fabric. The rectangles can be any size you want them to be, but 4 by 1 inches is a good place to start.Take a few pieces at a time. The rectangles will all be the same size.
Step 10: The first few fabric scraps should be laid across the first parallel line.
The scraps have to be centered on the line so that they stick out to each side.Overlap each scrap by a small amount. The first scrap has to be against the edge of the base fabric.
Step 11: You can sew the scraps down with your sewing machine.
Use a straight stitch and a thread color that matches your base fabric or coordinates with the scraps.Use the parallel line as a guide and backstitch across the first scrap a few times.
Step 12: Continue sewing with a few more scraps.
Continue adding scraps to the parallel line until you reach the bottom of the rug.You can backstitch the last scrap.Remove the excess thread.
Step 13: To see the next parallel line, fold the scraps to the side.
The scraps should be folded left if you started on the left side of the rug.If you started on the right side, you should fold them right. To get the scraps out of the way, you have to do this. You will accidentally sew them down if you don't.
Step 14: The same method is used for the next row of scraps.
You have to sew more scraps to the next parallel line now that you have scraps out of the way.You should backstitch at the start and end of your sewing. When you're done with that row, fold the scraps over and do the next one.Continue until you reach the opposite end of the rug.
Step 15: The rug needs to be finished.
Cut off any loose or hanging threads after you have all of the scraps attached. The rug is ready to use.
Step 16: Take your fabric and cut it into strips.
The width of the strips should all be the same.It would be ideal to have something around 112 inches wide.Old bed sheets or t-shirts work well for this, but you can use any type of fabric you want.If you are using plain cotton bed sheets, cut a notch in the fabric and tear it.If you are using t-shirts, cut the strips in one continuous strand, starting from the bottom hem and finishing under the armpits.
Step 17: There are three strips at the top.
You can put the strips on the couch to hold them steady.Attach a safety pin to a cabinet knob or handle by securing it to the end with a hook.
Step 18: There is a braid.
If you want to go over the middle one, cross the left and right strips. You can see how your rug is forming when you coil the braid as you work.
Step 19: As necessary, join two strips together.
The beginning of the next strip should be cut with a slit in the end.Take the end of the first strip and put it in the second strip.Next, thread the rest of the second strip through the slit on the first strip. To tighten the knot, tug on the two strips.
Step 20: Continue braiding until you get the size you want, then secure the end with a pin.
As you braid it, coil it into a spiral. You can secure the strips with a sewing pin or a safety pin if you want.Remove the excess strips.
Step 21: Stitch down the end of the braid.
You should go back to where you started the braid. The safety pin should be removed before folding the knot against the braid.Use a large, loose stitch on your sewing machine to sew the knot to the zigzag braid.Backstitch at the beginning of your sewing if you are using a sewing machine.
Step 22: The rug should be in a spiral.
Begin to sew the two edges of the rug together. You can do this by hand or on a sewing machine. If you are using a sewing machine, be sure to use a large zigzag stitch.Stop when you reach the last 2 inches.
Step 23: The end of the rug needs to be sewn down.
The braid should be folded against itself by 1 inch.Continue sewing the braid to the rest of the rug.Cut the thread when you are done. You should backstitch at the end of your sewing if you are using a sewing machine.
Step 24: A piece of cardboard can be used as a base.
You want the finished rug to be 4 inches larger than the width of the rectangle. If you use a box cutter, it would be easy.
Step 25: The cardboard has narrow edges.
Cut 2-inch (5.08-centimeter) long slits into the narrow ends of cardboard.Start and end with 2 inches from each side of your cardboard. The slits should be 12 inch apart the rest of the way.You can use a ruler to make your lines straight.Make sure the top and bottom are facing in the same direction. There is a 2-inch gap on both sides of the cardboard.
Step 26: Cut your fabric into strips.
Cotton fabric from a long time ago.Bed sheets are the best for this, but you can use other types as well.Cut the fabric into strips. If you want to save time, you can cut a notch into the fabric first and then tear it.Cut the t-shirt strips in one continuous strand, starting from the bottom hem and finishing under the armpits.
Step 27: Place your strips into the slit on the loom.
Take your first picture.Place one end on top of the cardboard and the other on the bottom. This is for the whole of the slit. You should have an even amount of fabric hanging out of the slit.
Step 28: Wrap a piece of tape around the new strip.
To begin weaving, choose a new strip of fabric.Wrap a piece of tape around the end to make it stiff.Starting from the left, weave it over and under the vertical strips on your cardboard.Pull the weaving strip until you have a long tail when you get to the opposite end.
Step 29: Go back to the left side.
You should weave in the opposite direction.Begin weaving over on the second row if you finished weaving under the first row.Push it up against the first one so that it is straight and snug.If you pull, your rug will curve inward.
Step 30: As needed, join strips back and forth.
Cut a slit into the end of your first strip and the beginning of the next strip.Take the end of the first strip and put it in the second strip.Pull the entire second strip through the slit on the first strip. To tighten them, tug on the strips.
Step 31: When you are done, tie the ends of the weaving strips.
Stop when you reach the bottom row.Cut your weaving strip to about 15 inches long.Pull the strip closest to the edge of the cardboard slit, then tie the two together in a double knot. The process should be repeated for the top.
Step 32: The fringes need to be cut.
To see the back of the loom, flip it over.As you cut across them, hold the fringes down with one hand. How long you make them is up to you.You should trim the fringe that is tied to the weaving strips.
Step 33: The rug has to be removed from the loom.
The rug is ready to use.
Step 34: Cut your fabric into strips.
Cotton fabric from a bed sheet is the best.If you use a duvet cover, you can cut the fabric in one continuous strip.Cut the fabric in one continuous strip, starting from the bottom hem, if you are using old t-shirts.
Step 35: The strips of fabric should be joined together.
Cut a slit into the end of one strip and the beginning of another. The end of the first strip should be moved through the slit on the second strip. The slit on the first strip should be pushed through by the opposite end of the second strip. To tighten the knot, pull on the second strip.Until you have one continuous strip, do this for all of your strips.Roll your strip into a ball. You don't have to do this if you cut the fabric in one continuous strip.
Step 36: There are 6 single crochets inside of the magic circle.
If you don't know how to do a magic circle, do 2 chain stitches and 6 single crochets into the second chain. You can join the first and last crochets with a slip stitch. The crochet hooks are meant for t-shirt yarn. The last slip stitch doesn't count for this method.
Step 37: Do a single crochet increase.
Round 2 begins with a chain stitch.Next, do 2 single crochets. The first and last stitches should be joined with a slip stitch.
Step 38: Every other stitch should be increased by a single crochet.
Round 3 begins with a chain stitch. In the first stitch do 2 single crochets, and in the next do one. This pattern is repeated for the rest of the round.Join with a slipstitch.
Step 39: Continue until you get your rug size.
You should begin your rounds with a chain stitch.Continue with 2 single crochets in the first stitch. With each round, increase the number of single crochets.Use a slip stitch to close each round.Round 4: ch 1, 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc for next 2 stitches, repeat for round, then join with sl st.Round 5: ch 1, 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc for next 3 stitches, repeat for round, then join with sl st.Round 6: ch 1, 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc for next 4 stitches, repeat for round, then join with sl st.
Step 40: You can finish the rug with a single crochet.
Start with a chain stitch.Do 1 single crochet. You can join the first and last crochets with a slip stitch.Tie the end off with a final chain stitch.Cut off the excess yarn.
Step 41: The tail ends of the fabric should be put into the rug.
The easiest way to do this is with a smaller crochet hook. The first thing to do is to weave in the tail on the outer edge of the rug.
