How To Keep Ants Off Hummingbird Feeders

The ants swarm into hummingbird feeders. There are many things that can be done to keep ants away.To repel ants, add things like moats and sticky substances. The feeder should be adjusted to make sure there are no leaks. You can throw ants off the trail by changing the location of the feeders.

Step 1: Invest in an ant.

A small cup is a small ant.You put it between the tree branch and the feeders. The ants can't go through the water. If you follow the instructions, you can attach a moat to your feeders. If you don't already have a hummingbird feed, buy one with an ant moat.

Step 2: Outside the feeder, add oily substances.

Put a sticky substance, such as vaseline, on the outside of the feeder. The ants won't be able to crawl through this substance.

Step 3: The feeder should be hung on the fishing line.

The fishing line is very slippery. The ants have a hard time moving across the wire.It will be harder for ants to get to the hummingbird feeders if they are hanging them from fishing line.

Step 4: Check for leaks.

The feeder should be checked on all sides.Look for cracks that are causing leaks. One of the easiest ways to attract ants is through leaks.Get a replacement feeder if you notice leaks.

Step 5: The feeder needs to be cleaned.

If you add new feed to the hummingbird feeders, wipe the exterior to remove any leftover sugar.Cleaning the feeders can keep ants away.If you want to burn your hands, make sure the water is not too hot.The feeder needs to be wiped until the sugar is gone.

Step 6: You should adjust the food you use.

One part sugar to four parts water is what homemade hummingbird nectar is made of.To deter ants, use less than one part sugar.Less sugar will result in less ants.

Step 7: The feeders should be moved frequently.

There are habitats around food sources.A colony of ants will not settle near the feeders if they are regularly moved. You can change the location of the feeders every couple of weeks.

Step 8: The feeders are in the shade.

A shaded area may be less likely to be invaded by ants.A shaded area will not attract hummingbirds.Hummingbirds can still access the feeders if you look for an area that is partially shaded.

Step 9: The water should be placed over the feeders.

If you have a fountain or other body of water in your yard, hang the feeder over it.As ants stay out of water, this will prevent them from crawling towards the feeders.
