A furnace control board is similar to a printed circuit board.

This is the first part of a three part article about how to minimize the risk of early failure.

Its brain is a furnace control board. It is the same as a computer circuit board. In the order they occur, it operates all functions. The furnace is controlled during each heating cycle.Circuit boards can fail and need to be replaced, and can be expensive to fix on a Hi-E furnace. One might fail early.

It is worth the effort to make sure your furnace control board lasts as long as possible, as it costs up to $1,000 to replace it.You will learn about the more common causes of failure in this 3-part article.

The video shows the light going off.The control board shuts the gas off because the flame sensor is dirty.

There is a flame rollout in the image above. The Flames should be large enough to fit through the holes.

During a "no heat" service call, owners often discover they have a cracked heat-exchanger.Their furnace shut down because air coming through the crack in the heat exchanger was blowing flames outside their area. The control board shut the furnace down after the switches sent a message.

The Blower Fan is turned on by the control board. The fan removes the heat from the furnace and sends it into the house.

The small blinking indicator light on your furnace's circuit board can be used to diagnose the problem. There is a small window on the furnace door.

The furnace has a problem with the number of blinks between pauses. The chart is usually located on the front of the furnace.

The example is that the item would be represented on the chart. The pressure switch may be said to be "Ignition Failure" on the chart.

Each function of the furnace is monitored by the control board. The furnace is shut down if something is wrong.

The furnace's burners can't light if the igniter fails. When heat is needed, the control board opens the gas valve for the burners and waits for a message from the flame sensor that a flame exists. If it doesn't get confirmation, the control board shuts the gas valve off and the furnace down until the igniter is replaced.
