How To Make a Bird Box

It is easy for most people to do bird watching.A variation of a bird house can be built if you want to bring the birds to your own backyard.Once you have your materials, you can build a cozy home for the birds in your area so they have a safe place to nest during the breeding season. You can reuse bird boxes, so you can clean them up and use them again and again.

Step 1: Cut the side panels from the wood.

Pine, cedar, or plywood is 1.5 cm thick.Measure out the 2 side panels using a ruler and tape, then use a saw to cut them out.The panels are both 15 cm wide and 20 cm long on one side and 25 cm on the other. The classic bird box shape will be created by the side panels being slanted at the top.If you want to find wood that has been approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, look for the logo on the label.Since all of your pieces are the same width, you may want to start with a piece that is 15 cm wide.

Step 2: The front, base, roof, and back are the same wood.

Measure out 4 new pieces with a tape measure using the same wood.Use a saw to cut them out.The front piece is 20 cm long and 15 cm wide. The piece is 15 cm wide and 12 cm long. The roof piece is long and wide. The back piece is 15 cm wide and 35 cm long.

Step 3: The front panel has a hole in it.

Attach a spade bit or boring bit to your drill and make a pencil mark about 1/3 of the way down your front panel.Birds can enter the box if you carve out a hole in the front with the boring bit.The small hole will allow smaller birds to get into the box while keeping large predatory birds out.If you want to attract larger birds, you should remove the front panel from the box.

Step 4: The base piece has 5 small holes.

Use your boring bit to make 5 marks on the base piece.Make five 1 to 2mm wide holes with your boring bit to let water and waste out of the box.The birds are more likely to stay if the box cleaner is kept.It will make sure that the birds have enough air to breathe.

Step 5: The sides should be nailed to the back plate.

Line up your side pieces so that the flat edges are flush with the bottom of the back plate.Attach the side pieces to the back plate with 2 nails on either side and leave 50 millimetres of space at the top.Leaving the space at the top will allow you to attach the roof.

Step 6: Attach the base to the back plate.

Line up your base plate with the bottom of the back plate and the side pieces using the holes in it.The base piece should be put in the back plate and side pieces with 4 nails. The birds will be sitting in the box and the base piece needs to be secure.

Step 7: Attach the front panel with nails.

Take the front piece and put it on the side panels so that the hole is near the top of the box.Attach the front piece to the side panels with 3 nails on either side, then use 2 more nails to attach the base piece.

Step 8: Attach a rubber hinge to the roof.

A strip of rubber is 15 cm wide and 12 cm tall.Attach the strip to the back plate with 2 nails.Attaching the top of the roof to the rubber hinge requires 2 more nails. To keep the roof closed, the top of the panels should be resting on.Attaching the roof with a hinge will make it easier to clean and maintain the box.

Step 9: If you want to, you can paint or decorate the box.

If you want to decorate your bird box with non-toxic, water-based paint, you can grab a paint brush and use it on the outside of the box.The box should be dry by the time you hang it outside. It is possible to make the box easier to see by painting it.

Step 10: Between February and March, you should put up your bird box.

Put up your box by the end of February if you are in the southern part of the country. You should put it up before late March in the northern part of the country. This will give the birds plenty of time to use the box.It can take a few years for birds to find your box, so don't be discouraged if it takes a while to get used to it.

Step 11: The back plate has a hole in it.

To make a hole at the top of the back plate, use a 4 in drill bit.It will be easier to hang the box later on because the screw won't have as much wood to push through. It's fine if you have to push through the rubber hinge.

Step 12: The box should be at least 2 to 5 m above the ground.

You can hang your bird box from a tree or pole that is out of the direct sunlight.Attach the top of the bird box to the tree or pole with a screw and drill. The birds can go in and out with ease if it is really sturdy. The birds are safe from the ground if the bird box is high up.The birds will bring their own materials to your box, so you don't need to add anything.

Step 13: You should wash your bird box every October or November.

After each breeding season, take your box down from its mount and dump any waste inside of it.Let it air dry before you hang it up, then use boiling water to clean the inside.Do not use harsh chemicals to clean your bird box.Unhatched eggs should be left in the box when you open it.Eggs can only be removed from October to January and they must be destroyed, which is against the law.
