A cutting board will keep you from damaging your counter when cutting food. You can buy a cutting board in a store, but you can make your own with a few supplies. This is a butcher's block that has alternating strips of wood.
Step 1: You can build your board with three thick planks of wood.
You can use any wood you want, but you should have at least an inch of thickness. You will be using 1 cherry board, 1 maple board and 1 walnuts board.
Step 2: Take care of your construction and safety supplies.
A fair amount of supplies is needed to do this correctly. You should have wood glue safety gloves, goggles, and earmuffs.
Step 3: Make sure you have the correct woodworking machines.
You need to know how to use the machinery safely.Planer was seen by the Orbital sander Table.
Step 4: Cut your board to 1/2 or so longer than the final length.
The final length of the board comes down to you, and this lesson will aim for a 12 x 16 board. You will clean the edge to your exact specifications later if you leave an extra 1/2 or so.Cut all the boards to the same length. You can use the table saw or the miter saw.You should cut off any rough edges.
Step 5: Use a pencil to mark the width of each strip.
The width is up to you, but the thickness is good.Use your pencil to measure out the wood on the boards. To build the final cutting board, you'll alternate strips from each type of wood to run along the board.
Step 6: Use the table saw to cut wood.
Cut along your pencil lines slowly. You should get three sets of strips of wood. They look like posts. The starting width of your wood will affect the number of strips you end up with.If you want, you can play with or adapt this formula, cutting different widths to get a variable striping on your final board.
Step 7: Put the strips of wood in a pattern.
One of the easiest styles to alternate is cherry, maple, walnut, cherry.Place the wood into a "dry cut" of the final cutting board if you want the nicest side to be facing up.
Step 8: Make the side face up by rotating the strips clockwise.
You will be using wood glue to adhere the wood strips to each other, so turn each piece over so that the side you'll be gluing faces upward.
Step 9: Wood glue should be applied liberally to each strip of wood.
Glue can be applied to one side of every strip of wood.Glue should be covering the entire side. You will clean it up later if you don't worry about dripping or excess glue now.
Step 10: The wood must be pressed evenly together.
The glue sides should be between the pieces of wood.To make sure they don't slide, line them up and press them together.
Step 11: Attach the clamps on either side of the board.
It is necessary to help the wood glue dry.As you apply the clamps, make sure the wood stays level.Pieces should not push upwards. The bottom and top should be even as well.
Step 12: The wood glue should not stick to the table if the work surface is lifted and dried.
Lift the cutting board and let it dry on the wood glue bottle. It should take 1-2 hours, but check the bottle for details.
Step 13: Use a chisel to remove large chunks of glue.
Once the glue is dry, remove the clamps. If there are big chunks of glue on the board, lightly chisel them off.
Step 14: The board should be run through the planer.
This makes it a perfect surface. You don't need to take a lot off.For a smooth board, run both sides through.Taking off an inch from each side will usually get rid of any issues.
Step 15: You can use a table saw to cut your edges.
It is easy to get the board to the right size now that all the strips are attached.Cut the ends of the board to your final length with the saw.
Step 16: To give the board a smooth polish, use your orbital sander.
You shouldn't do a lot of sanding after the planer. To smooth the board, round the edges, and remove any roughness created by the saw, use 220 grit paper.
Step 17: Finish the board with some mineral oil.
It's easier to clean and work with a protective coating on the board. To dry the board, use a damp rag.Working in small circles, apply the food-grade mineral oil to the board, using a rag to apply a thin coating across the entire board. It's time to dry your cutting board. There should be a light shine on the board. If the mineral oil seems unfinished in places, apply it again.Linseed oil and beeswax are used in cooking.
