Flies can be a problem if they are in the house, on the porch, or in your garden. There are many traps and sprays you can buy in stores, but they can often contain chemicals that are harmful to your health.Fly swatters are great for a single fly, but an onslaught can be hard to contain.Making your own fly trap is a great solution to your fly problem. You can take a few quick steps to manage the problem and get rid of the flies.
Step 1: There is an empty bottle.
This can be used or simply poured out.Make sure the cap is removed and that the soda has been washed out with warm water.
Step 2: The bottle's top should be cut off.
There are a pair of scissors.Use one of the blades on the scissors to poke a hole in the bottle. The large shaft begins near the middle of the bottle, where the funnel ends.Attach your scissors and cut around the bottle after you poked the hole. The top and bottom of the funnel should be cut off.If you flip the funnel upside-down, it won't stay in place, so try to cut as close to the edge as possible. You can cut the top funnel with a sharp knife, but make sure you don't cut yourself. It is better to use a safe pair of scissors if you are doing this project with your children.
Step 3: The piece should be flipped over.
Put it in the bottom of the bottle. It should stick inside if you cut close to the edge of the funnel.
Step 4: The edges of the bottle parts need to be joined together.
The most effective way to staple the edges is with a staple gun.Simply staple three or four times around the bottle. An adult should staple the two parts together if the project is done with children. The following options work if you don't have a stapler. If you want a good option, make sure the tape is water resistant. There are pieces of tape around the funnel. You need to be water resistant if you want to use superglue or regular glue.Glue around the top of the base before you add the funnel. The funnel should be upside-down.Press the base with your fingers.Wait until it is dry to put the two pieces in place.
Step 5: You can make a melted sugar mixture.
The sugar should be put into a pot.The pot should be placed on the stove top.Place the sugar evenly across the bottom of the pot.The top of the sugar should be covered with water.Slowly heat the mixture over high heat. The mixture should be stirred well.boiling makes "syrup", a more concentrated attractant, since dissolving sugar in hot/warm tap water makes sweet water.Allow the liquid to sit until it warms up.
Step 6: The bottle has a funnel at the end.
If you put it down the edges of the funnel, the flies will stick right from the start.
Step 7: Use a different type of bait.
You can slice up some apples and push them through the funnel.A small amount of old wine and a piece of raw meat will work. You can add water with either sugar or honey.
Step 8: Add in some water.
If your bait is a liquid, add a small amount of white vinegar. This will help keep bees away from the trap.
Step 9: Put the bottle in the sun.
It will help the fruit to rot and increase the likelihood of flies smelling the bait.It will draw flies towards the trap by causing liquid to evaporate.Your new fly trap catches flies.
Step 10: Repeatedly open the bottle.
The insects are attracted to heat and carbon dioxide. You can rub the bottle in between your hands.
Step 11: Throw the bottle away.
Throw the bottle away and make another one after you see the flies accumulate. You will have to start again once the effects of your bait are used up.Fly/bait will get stuck to the inside of the funnel if you try to empty the bottle. You don't want to have to hold dead flies with your hands.
Step 12: You can find a suitable can.
A standard size dog food can is perfect. The can lid should be removed and washed with warm water.Proceed to the next step if you are dry.
Step 13: Cut out lengths of duct tape.
They have to be long enough to wind around the can.The trap will not work if you touch the sticky ends.
Step 14: Wrap the lengths around the can.
Press the duck tape against the can with your hands.Give the duck tape a gentle rub.
Step 15: The can has duct tape in it.
The can's surface will become sticky. You can see how sticky the can is by touching it.New lengths of duct tape should be used if it isn't very sticky.
Step 16: Attach a flashlight to the can lid.
The flashlight's base should be put over the lid.The base for the flytrap will be created by this.If you can find a UV flashlight, flies will most likely be attracted to it.
Step 17: The can should be put outside at night.
The can needs to be upright to catch flies.Put the flashlight in the can.The flashlight should have new batteries in it.
Step 18: Wait for the flies.
They'll be attracted to the light but stuck on the sticky sides of the can.
Step 19: The can should be replaced.
If you caught flies with the can, it is a good idea to throw it away. You don't have to touch the flies if you use a pair of gloves. It's a good idea to have a plastic grocery store bag ready to put the can in.
Step 20: A small container is needed.
This can be either a glass jar or a plastic container and you can put nuts or peanut butter in it.If the jar has a lid, remove it.
Step 21: Add the liquid to the container.
Purchase a jar of apple vinegar and put it in a container. The flies will find this attractive.
Step 22: Add dish soap to water.
The surface tension can be broken with a few drops of dish detergent or soap. The flies can use their legs to stand on top of the vinegar and drink it up.
Step 23: Add fruit to the mix.
Fruit and meat are also okay options if you don't want to add the dish soap mixture to your container.Put what you want to add in the bottom of the container. The flies like the smell of rotting food.If you're trying to catch flies, switch up your bait.If you want to catch fruit flies, place bananas in the trap or use raw potato. You can use anything for house flies.
Step 24: The container should be covered with plastic wrap.
Rip off a piece that is at least three inches long.Wrap around the container tightly with your hands.Put a rubber band around the plastic wrap if it isn't staying in place.
Step 25: The plastic wrap has holes in it.
A toothpick, scissors, knife, and other items can be used. There are four small holes in the plastic wrap. The flies will be able to enter the trap.
Step 26: The trap should be outside.
The flies will get into the trap.It will be hard for them to escape because they will not be able to find the holes. They will eat whatever is in the container.
Step 27: Kill the flies.
Over time, some of the flies will die in the trap. Some flies will still be eating whatever you put in the container.Place the trap near the sink inside the house. The hot water should be turned on in your sink. The sink should fill up if the stopper is down. For ten minutes, place the container in the sink. The flies will be drowned.
Step 28: The dead flies should be thrown out.
Throw the plastic wrap away.Put the container in the trash can and bang it against it.Continue until all the flies have been removed, along with whatever mixture you put in there to begin with.
Step 29: Disinfect the container.
You can wash the container with soap and warm water.Safe chemicals can be used to make sure the container is clean and ready to use again. You can make another trap after the container is clean.
Step 30: Get out of the store.
You will need to make long strips of sticky fly paper for the bag to be tall.If you use plastic bags, the sticky mixture won't stick to the plastic.
Step 31: Take out the strips of paper.
The strips are about one inch by six inches. You will need at least four-five of these strips.Put them on the table after you have cut them.
Step 32: There are holes in the strips.
Use a pair of scissors or a knife to poke a hole in the strip. This should be done to every strip. If you have one of those, you can also use a hole-punch.
Step 33: Attach a string through the hole.
A piece of string or wire should be at least six inches long. Each strip of paper will need strings.Tie a knot by feeding the wire through the hole.
Step 34: A sugar mixture can be made.
Put sugar, honey, and water in a saucepan.Put the saucepan on the stove with the ingredients in it.The mixture should cool to room temperature after it's been mixed.
Step 35: The paper should be put into the mixture.
If you want to coat it in syrup, place each strip into it.Let the strips dry out on the baking sheet.
Step 36: Put the strips up.
Attach the string to a nail or tack. You can either hang them all around the house or put them near each other.Hanging them close to each other will make the trap more effective.
Step 37: The paper needs to be thrown away.
Take your strips down and throw them away.It is possible that the strips don't have enough syrup on them because they are not working. You can either make a new bunch of syrup or just start over and make new strips.
