A simple project that will leave you with a cozy spot to relax is making a hammock chair.The chairs are perfect for adding a unique element to any room or for an outdoor spot that isn't big enough for a full hammock.You will have the perfect size, shape, and color to match your furniture if you make one for yourself.A good chunk of time and several basic materials are required for this project.You will have a hammock chair that is sure to impress anyone who sits in it.
Step 1: The canvas needs to be cut for the seat.
The seats can be made to fit any size person.Adults will need 3-4 yards of fabric to make a seat, while a small child will only need 2 yards.The standard width of canvas is 1.75 yards.Make your cuts along the longer edges of the fabric by folding the canvas long-ways.Cut along the short side if you want your chair to be wider.The short-side cut makes a better chair.
Step 2: Place the full piece of canvas in half.
The canvas should be folded in half.To the left is the folded edge.Take a point about 7 inches to the left of the top right corner and draw a diagonal line with a pencil.You will cut here.Make sure the folded edge is oriented to the left.You want to cut the side that is unfolded.
Step 3: Use sharp fabric scissors to cut along the line.
Take care to avoid creating a raggedy edge.If you do, you don't have to worry because you can fold it over later.Spread the work out on the canvas.You should have a four-sided shape with two edges of equal length, a long side and a short side.The shortest side is at the top.
Step 4: Hem the edge of the fabric.
If you want to iron the edges, fold them back half an inch.If you want to reinforce it, pin them in place, and then sew the fold twice in two parallel lines.The top and bottom of the chair seat should be raised.The diagonal edges are only used once.The diagonals that you cut earlier should be folded as you did the other edges.Press and sew the edge to reinforce it.
Step 5: There are 1 12” pockets on each side.
Put an inch and a half pocket back on each hemmed diagonal edge.The pocket seam large enough to pull the rope through is created by sewing two reinforced lines along the hem.Use back stitches to reinforce your beginning and ending.The pockets are going to hold your weight so they need to be secured.
Step 6: The canvas should be designed with fabric paint.
You can use fabric paint to express yourself in your hammock chair.If you want to avoid a mess, place your canvas on a large sheet of cardboard.As you can see the back and bottom of the chair, consider painting both sides.Allow plenty of dry time before moving on to the next step.You can use printed fabric, but make sure it is upholstery weight or outdoor fabric to ensure its strength.
Step 7: There are four holes in the dowel.
There are two holes at each end of the dowel.You can drill through the holes using your bit.Sand the hole to get rid of burrs.If you like the natural wood tone, you can leave it or stain it.
Step 8: Guide the rope through the canvas pocket by knotting one end.
3” of a tail can be left beyond the knot if you tie a large knot at one end of the rope.The end of the rope can be melted using a lighter.The unknotted end should be threaded through the canvas.Go up from the widest corner of one side of the canvas seat to the narrow corner at the top using the guide.Take 3 feet from your first knot and tie another knot.The knot you just tied rests against the bottom of the dowel if you thread the rope through the inner hole.
Step 9: The rope should be Threaded through the other side of the canvas.
Start by threading it through the hole on the other side of the dowel.To tie a loose knot, measure 3 feet from the loose end.The bottom of the dowel is where this knot will rest.The rope should be Threaded down through the other canvas pocket at the narrow end and the wider end.
Step 10: Thread the rope.
Guide it up through the last hole.Measure 3” from the loose end and tie a knot.The outside of the dowel is where the knot will rest.The knots should be on the dowel when they are finished.If the two lengths of rope are not even, adjust the knots before pulling them tight.
Step 11: Hang the chair.
Tie a knot with 8” to 10” of excess above the center of the rope.Attach the spring link to the excess rope above the knot.Attach the hanging hook to a ceiling beam or tree branch that can support your weight, then hang the link from it.
