How To Make a Plastic Bag Holder

Many people like to use their plastic grocery bags as trashcan liners.Plastic bags can take up a lot of room. You can always put yours in an extra plastic bag, but why do that when you can make something that looks nicer?Plastic bag holders are easy to make. You can have a plastic bag holder in your kitchen in no time with just a few supplies.

Step 1: Remove the label from a plastic soda bottle.

You can wash it off with rubbing alcohol or white vinegar.

Step 2: You need to cut off the top portion of the bottle in order to open it.

You could make a mark from the base of the neck and use that as a cutting guide. You can cut the bottle with a box cutter or craft blade.

Step 3: The bottom of the bottle needs to be cut off.

A molded line is found in some plastic soda bottles. If your bottle is one of those, you can use that line as a cutting guide.Cut off 1 to 2 inches from the bottom of the bottle.

Step 4: The ragged edges on the top and bottom should be trimmed with a pair of scissors.

You can make the bottom smooth by pressing a hot iron against it.The plastic bags may get caught if you do this for the top hole. You can use the highest setting on your iron.

Step 5: If you want, you can paint or decorate the bottle.

If you want to make your holder look nicer, you can spray paint it or cover it with scrapbooking paper.Attach the paper with tape.

Step 6: Attach a ribbon through the holes on both sides of the cut bottom edge.

This is the top of the bag holder.Alternatively, you can thread a piece of ribbon through the hole and then tie it into a loop.

Step 7: Put the holder by the ribbon and fill it with bags.

Put the bags into the bottle one at a time. The plastic bags have a small hole at the bottom.

Step 8: The bag holder is plastic.

The plastic bags should be pulled from the bottom hole.Stuff more plastic bags through the top hole to refill the bag.

Step 9: A 15 by 15-inch piece of fabric is required.

Ordinary cotton wouldn't work for this, but upholstery-weight fabric would be even better. If you use a lot of bags, consider using a piece of fabric instead.

Step 10: If you want to make the hems, you need to turn the fabric so that the wrong side is facing you.

If you want to press them with an iron, fold the edges over by 14 inch.Press them flat with an iron if you fold them over by 12 inch.If you are using a longer piece of fabric, fold and press the narrower edges.

Step 11: There is a piece of folded ribbon at the center of the hems.

Take a piece of ribbon and fold it in half.Place the ribbon in the center of your hem.The bottom edge of the hem should be aligned with the ribbon's bottom/raw edges. This will make a loop on the bag holder so that you can hang it.

Step 12: The hems should be Edge Stitched down.

You can slide the elastic through if you sew close to the inner folded edge.Make sure to sew over the ribbon when you reach it.To make sure that your elastic will fit, sew 18 to 1-inch away from the inner edge of the hem.

Step 13: Attach a piece of elastic through the top and bottom hems with pins.

Cut two pieces of elastic.Pull the elastic through the top hem with a safety pin.The hem will come up on the elastic if you Pin both ends of it to the openings. When you are done, use the other elastic for the bottom hem.

Step 14: The right sides of the fabric should be facing each other.

The hems should be on the top and bottom of the fabric square. The edges should be secured with more pins.

Step 15: Use a 14 inch seam allowance to sew along the raw edge.

For extra security, backstitch the hems and ends of the elastic a few times. The raw edge should be finished with a zigzag stitch. As you sew, remove the sewing pins.Remove loose threads for a neater finish.

Step 16: If you want to use your bag, turn it inside out.

The ribbon loop can be used to hang it.Put the bags in the bag.The plastic bags need to be pulled out.
