Any home décor can be improved with wall hangings. It is possible to make your own personalized wall hanging, which will match your style, and is exactly what you want.Traditional wall hangings derive from Japan, using scroll paintings or calligraphy against silk on rollers and strung from a nail.A modern take on wall hangings uses canvassed art against a wooden frame.Regardless of the type of wall hanging you choose, they are easy, quick and fun to complete.
Step 1: Select what you want.
Pick the fabric you want to hang and display.Traditional Marimekko fabric is often hung as an accent for your home, but you can hang almost any fabric design you want.Four stretcher bars are required to make a frame. In terms of thickness, color, and other factors, these vary a lot.Go to your local arts and crafts store to find bars which accent your fabric of choice, and which are large or small enough for your particular project, if you would rather make your own frame.Buy smaller bars if you want a small picture. You will get two smaller bars and two larger bars if you pre-package them. You need to pick up a heavy-duty staple gun, an iron, a hammer, 2 eye hooks, and some picture frame wire.
Step 2: You need to assemble your frame.
Each corner of the stretcher bars has a 90 degree angle.Make sure that you place a small bar next to a large one, and the picture frame looks normal.Make sure the corners are in place with a gentle tap and hammer. If you want to help secure the notch, you can use glue.Put a small amount of wood glue on the receiving end of the notch.Lift away from the bar after holding for a few minutes at a 90 degree angle.
Step 3: You should iron your fabric.
Put your piece of fabric on a flat surface, such as an ironing board. So that the design is facing downward.Press against the back of your fabric when you set your iron to the low setting. To smooth out the entire piece, work it to the left and right.Allow your fabric to rest.Place the frame on top of the fabric.Measure 2 inches of fabric on each side of the frame using a ruler.Use a pair of scissors or a blade to cut the fabric at the 2 inch mark around the frame.Make sure you use a cutting board so that you don't cut through the table if you decide to use the rotary blade.
Step 4: You should staple your fabric.
You can start on either side.Attach the fabric to the wood by placing it around the middle of the side.Pull the fabric tight.Place the staplers about an inch apart on each corner.Pull the fabric tight. The previous instructions should be repeated for each side.Re-staple your fabric if you think it's too loose underneath one of the staplers. The fabric should be loose on the corners. The corner fabric should not be stapled down.
Step 5: The corner fabric needs to be cut off.
The best way to cut this is with a pair of scissors.Don't cut off all of the fabric, just a small amount. This is done for each corner. You can lay one side of the fabric down against the frame after you have cut it.Each staple is about 1/2 inch apart from the other.Give a gentle tap with a hammer to any staple you don't think have fully sunk in.
Step 6: You should add wire to your frame.
You want to hang the fabric from the top bar.Put the eye hooks on each side of the bar.Feed the wire through the eye hooks. The wire should be Curled on each end.You don't want the wire to show when you hang it up.Cut a new piece of wire if you think your piece is too long.About 1/2 inch of lag is what you want.Attach the wire and hang it on the wall.
Step 7: Take your materials.
The canvas or burlap is the most important item to buy. This can be found at craft stores. You can pick any color of canvas you want, but remember that you will be painting designs on top of the material. You should go for lighter colors, such as white or off-white.You will need painter's tape, fabric paint, a paper plate and a small paintbrush, as well as a template with your design of choice.
Step 8: The canvas should be laid out vertically.
Measure 3 inches from the bottom of the canvas and draw a straight horizontal line with a ruler.Take a piece of masking tape that is 2 1/2 feet long and place it along the line.Measure 1 inch above the masking tape and draw a horizontal line.Place a 2 1/2 foot long piece of masking tape along the line.
Step 9: You can paint the canvas.
A small amount of fabric paint can be put on a paper plate.Put the paintbrush between the two pieces of tape.Make sure not to get loose paint on the rest of the canvas while you paint over the tape.Rather than brush in long strokes, it is best to dab.Put your paintbrush under some hot water by wiping it off with a paper towel. This will remove excess paint.Wait for the paint to dry before you remove the tape. You can add more stripes if you want.If you want to paint a 1/2 inch stripe above the one you already painted, you need to adjust the height of your stripes. You can see each stripe if you leave some space between them. You need some space to paint on your design, so don't make too many stripes.
Step 10: You can print out the template.
You should stick to something basic that can be identified by the outline of the object or thing.Animals, flowers, architecture, and many other simple designs can be found online.Print out the picture and cut it out with scissors. You can change the size of the picture when you print it out.You don't want it to be larger than 2 1/2 feet in vertical and horizontal width.Cut out your design and place it on the canvas.Make sure it is equidistant on the horizontal and vertical sides by using a ruler.Remove the design with a pencil mark.
Step 11: Paint the inside of your design.
A small amount of fabric paint can be spread on a paper plate.Use your small paintbrush to apply paint to the fabric.Multiple colors can be used for your design.Black or white paint can be used to create shading.Keep the paint color in line with the original design. If you do a piece of architecture, use brown or grey paint. To give your canvas time to dry, set it aside once you are done painting. You can rub the excess paint on your paintbrush with a paper towel and then run the paintbrush under some hot water.
Step 12: Add life and texture to your painting.
This step is optional. When your canvas is nearly dried, you can use fabric to give your painting a more worn and antiquated look.If you fold it like an accordion, it will relieve the stress. You can use a piece of paper to smooth over the design. This will peel off some of the paint. You will need to iron the canvas if you choose to do this step.Using the low setting on your iron, iron the blank canvas around the design. It's a good idea to do this on an ironing board. There is a nice contrast between the old design and the smooth canvas that can be created by ironing the excess fabric.Once you are done ironing, put your canvas in a safe place so that it doesn't get wrinkled.
Step 13: You can make loops at the top and bottom of the canvas.
The loops will be used to hold the rods. When your canvas is completely dry, flip it over.Curl the top part of the canvas backwards so that you have one inch of fabric on the back.If you want to keep it from curling back, you can crease it.Place fabric glue on the edge of the pulled back fabric. It's important to leave some space for your rod to slide through.Press the edge down onto the canvas and apply pressure until it is dry.At the bottom of your canvas, do the same thing.Pull backwards an inch of fabric and crease it.Put some fabric glue on the edge of the folded fabric and apply pressure until it is dry.Hot glue can be used for a faster drying period if you don't have the patience for typical fabric glue.Don't get any hot glue on your hands if you are using safe practices.
Step 14: The loops have you slide your rods through them.
There is one rod for each of the loops. The eye hooks are screws with hoops on the end.You may need to pre-drill a tiny hole in order to expedite the process, but you should be able to screw them in by hand.Through the eye hooks, thread one strand of twine. You can hang your canvas if you leave some lagging twine in between.Near the eye hooks, tie a knot on each end of twine. You can hang the tapestry design on your wall once you are done.
Step 15: You should gather your materials.
You will need to purchase a rod.The length of the rod depends on how much yarn you plan to use and how many colors you want to add.You will need multiple casts of yarn.Pick up some heavy duty scissors.
Step 16: Prepare the yarn.
You will need different lengths of yarn.Wrap your first color of yarn around your elbow and between your thumb and pointer finger.Wrap it around and make loops. The strings will be hanging from the rod.Take the yarn off of your elbow and finger and lay it on the side.Your shortest length of yarn will be this one.You need to make at least 2 more sections, each of a different color. The second section should be about 36 inches long and 24 inches wide. You can wrap your yarn in a variety of ways, from your arm to your foot. You can use a long ruler to cut 36 or 48 inch pieces.Make sure to keep your wrapped yarn loops in their loop form by setting them to the side.
Step 17: The yarn should be arranged in terms of color.
Take your longest strands and cut them at the end of the loop with scissors. To make sure the strings are equidistant on both sides of the rod, drape them over it.They have to be crunched together on one end of the rod.Take your next longest strands and do the same thing.Cut them at one end and drape them over the rod.Next to the 24 inch strands, slide them together.Do the same with 48 inch strands. They should be crunched together against the strands. Now is the time to add even more lengths.
Step 18: Glue your strands together.
Take out your glue once you have arranged the strands.Start with the shortest strands.Attach a strip of glue to the rod by lifting the section up.Try to keep the strings on both sides by pressing the strands down.Hold them down until the glue is dried. The same thing should be done for the 36 and 48 inch strands.Put glue on the rod, keep it bunched up, and press against the previous lengths.Put your rod in a dry place. You don't want to start cutting the yarn until the glue is dry.
Step 19: You should trim and be creative.
You need to hang your design where you want it to stay permanently. It might mean hanging it on a few nails or tacks on the wall. You can buy eye hooks and screw them onto the end of the rod.Tie knots on the ends of the eye hooks as you slide a piece of yarn through them. The string should be put on a hook or tack.Get rid of the scissors. The bottom of your yarn should be cut at an angle. You can either cut every strand at one continuous angle, cut each of the separate colors at different angles, or just cut whichever way you want. The key is to think outside the box.It doesn't need to be perfect. If you make a mistake, you can make another one in a short period of time. There are mistakes with this project.
