You can make a wizard hat if you need a magical accessory.Cut a few pieces of construction paper into a cone and brim to make a simple hat.If you want a fabric hat, cut it out of felt pieces, which are easy to sew and don't fray.You can use glitter glue or ribbons to decorate the hat.
Step 1: To start the cone, draw a semi-circle on a piece of construction paper.
The hat should be made of heavy construction paper.If you press the point of a compass on the long side of the paper, it will be in the middle.Pull the compass pencil out and it's 9 to 12 inches from the point.To draw a curve from one side of the paper to the other, swing the pencil.You can tie a string to a pencil if you don't have a compass.The string should be the same width as the semi-circle.Pull the string taut before drawing the curve with the pencil.If the hat is for a small child, make the semi-circle 9 inches wide.If the hat is for an older kid or adult, draw a semi-circle.
Step 2: The cone can be formed by cutting out the semi-circle and overlaping the pointed ends.
Use scissors to cut the line you drew.Hold a pointed end with each hand and make the paper curve.Pull the ends together and overlap them by 1 inch.There is a gap along the long side of the cone if the pointed ends are not overlap.
Step 3: There are points at the bottom of the cone.
The cone comes undone if you let go of the points.Adhere the bottom of the cone where the edges overlap.Double-sided tape or glue can be used to keep the edges in place if you don't have a stapler.If you are rough with the hat, the paper may come undone.
Step 4: Cut 2 in (1.3 cm) around the bottom of the cone.
Attach the fringe to the hat by making it along the base of the cone.Slits along the bottom of the cone can be cut with scissors.Between the slit, leave 1 inch.If you bend each slit, it will point away from the cone.
Step 5: To start the brim of the hat, draw a circle on construction paper.
Write down the measurement on the ruler at the bottom of the cone.Draw the same line on construction paper.If you want to draw a circle, put your compass point on the middle of the line.The circle should have the same diameter as the cone measurement.
Step 6: You can make another circle that is larger than the one you drew.
The outer brim of the hat is the larger circle.Pull the pencil out from the middle of the line you drew for your first circle if you want to use the compass.To draw a bigger circle, use the pencil.
Step 7: The circles should be cut out and thrown away.
Cut out the big circle with scissors.If you want to stick your scissors into the paper, you have to poke a hole in the center of the small circle.Get rid of the small circle by cutting it out.If you have a box cutter and a cutting mat, you can use it to cut the inner circle.When using a box cutter, always use caution.
Step 8: Glue the top of the cone's fringe.
You folded away from the cone and squeezed craft glue onto the top of the slit.Push the large circle you just cut out onto the cone to get the glue to dry.The fringe should be stuck to the piece by pressing along the base.You can tape the fringe to the brim if you don't have glue.
Step 9: Your hat should be decorated with drawings, stickers, or glitter glue.
If you're making a wizard hat for a kid, make sure they have lots of fun items to put on it.Drawing custom designs can be done with glow-in-the-dark stickers, glittery glue, or markers.Press crescent moon stickers on the cone of the hat and draw swirls of glitter glue around the brim.Don't forget to dry the hat before putting it on.You can give the hat a mystical look by buying a package of shimmer star or moon stickers.If you don't have glitter glue, put craft glue on the hat and sprinkle it with glitter.Make stars, planets or words like that.There is a hat.
Step 10: To start the brim, draw a 20 in (51 cm) diameter circle out of felt.
Spread 1 yard (0.91 m) of felt on your work surface and tie a 10 in (25 cm) piece of string to a fabric pencil or marker.Press the end of the string down with your finger from a corner.Pull the fabric pencil so the string is taut and use it to draw a 20 in (51 cm) wide circle on the felt.Pick any color of felt for your hat.Black, gray, and brown are great colors.Since this hat has a floppy look around the brim, it's fine if your circle isn't perfect.
Step 11: The felt circles are 20 inches (51 cm) in diameter.
Use scissors to cut the circle out of the felt.Cut around the piece of felt that's on your work surface to make an identical circle.If you don't want to use scissors, place the felt on a cutting mat and use a rotary cutter to cut out the circles.
Step 12: In the center of the large circle, draw an 8 or 9 in circle.
Put the string down in the center of your felt circle by shortening it by 8 or 9 inches.To draw a smaller circle on the felt, extend the string and use the attached fabric pencil or marker.If you want the wizard's hat to fit high on your head or if you're making it for a kid, make the small circle 20 cm in diameter.Draw a circle 9 inches in diameter to make a wizard's hat.
Step 13: You can cut out the small circle by cutting a line through the brim.
There are sewing pins around the small circle.This keeps them from sliding.Use your scissors to cut a straight line from the edge of the large circle to the small circle.Cut around the small circle and discard the felt.Cut away from the line towards the middle of the circle.It gives you more space for sewing.You can make the brim of the hat slope down by cutting a wedge from the felt pieces.Bring the edges of 1 piece together.To join the edges, sew straight stitches and then repeat this for the other brim piece.
Step 14: If you want to match the shape of the brim, cut a piece of high loft batting.
Lay the batting flat after opening a package of high loft batting.You can cut out the batting easily if you use the felt brim pieces as a template.If you sewed the edges together, you can also cut a wedge from the felt.
Step 15: Put the felt pieces on the batting first.
Line the edges of the batting with the felt pieces.Take a sewing pin and insert it through the material.The sewing pins should be placed around the outer edge of the brim.
Step 16: To flip the felt under the batting, sew the outer edge of the brim.
The sewing machine will make straight stitches around the outside edge of the circle.Take about a 2 inch seam allowance.The batting is between the felt layers if you flip the top layer of felt.If you don't have a sewing machine, you can use a needle and thread to make straight stitches.
Step 17: Cut a triangle out of the felt.
Lay the felt flat after folding it in half.A straight line is 22 inches long on the folded side.You can swing the other end of the yardstick away by keeping one end in place.To connect the triangle, draw this line and make a line at the bottom.
Step 18: Turn the cone right-side out by sewing the long sides.
Use your sewing machine to make straight stitches when you fold the felt triangle in half.As you sew, leave a 4 inch seam allowance.You can't see the stitches if you flip the cone inside.You can make straight stitches by hand if you don't have a sewing machine.
Step 19: Attach the base of the cone to the brim.
To fit at the base of the hat, lower the brim down.If you want to see the inside of the cone, turn it upside down.After sewing around the inner brim, leave a 4 inch (0.64 cm) seam allowance.If you don't want to worry about sewing through all the layers of fabric, straight stitch around the inner brim materials before attaching the cone.
Step 20: If you want the hat to point up, Stuff the inside of the cone with batting.
Stuffing or pulling apart batting will give your wizard's hat a character and shape.If you want it to be stiff, push it into the inside of the cone.To keep the batting from falling out, you can sew a small circle of felt to the inside of the hat.Don't put stuffing in the cone if you want a floppier hat.
