Paper clay is a cheap, handy sculpting material made from toilet paper, glue and a few other hardware store supplies. It's used in place of paper strips for a realistic finish. You can paint with paper clay, which takes about five minutes to make.
Step 1: You need to gather your supplies.
To make paper clay, you'll need toilet paper as well as a few supplies. You can mold over any type of prepared form with this recipe. You can apply paint or varnish when it dries into a hard surface. You need 1 roll of single ply toilet paper, 1 cup premixed joint compound, and 1/3 cup PVA glue.
Step 2: The paper needs to be removed from the roll.
It's easier to remove the entire roll of paper from the cardboard roll at the same time. The toilet paper should be placed in one of the bowls.
Step 3: The bowl should be filled with water.
When it's completely saturated, pour it over the toilet paper. To make sure the toilet paper gets wet, push it down into the water.
Step 4: Put the toilet paper in a different bowl.
You can squeeze out as much water as possible if you tear it off in smaller chunks. You can mix the chunks with the other ingredients by placing them in a separate bowl.Continue until you get all of the toilet paper.
Step 5: Take 1 1/2 cups of toilet paper.
A cup and a half of toilet paper equates to one roll.If your brand of toilet paper makes small or large rolls, you might end up with less than you need. You have 1 1/2 cups of toilet paper in the bowl if you make more or discard the excess.
Step 6: The remaining ingredients should be added.
Add a cup of premixed joint compound, 1/3 cup white school glue, 2 ounces of mineral oil, and 1/2 ounce of white flour to the bowl.Substitute these ingredients with something else. The consistency of the paper clay can be changed by different types of glue, oil, flour and so on.
Step 7: Put the clay in a container and mix it up.
You can beat the clay with your electric mixer. The paper fibers will break down and blend with the other ingredients to make a dough-like consistency. If you want a thicker clay, add an extra half cup of flour.Add an extra half cup of glue for a thinner consistency.
Step 8: A sculpture form should be prepared.
Paper clay is used in place of paper mache strips, which are typically dipped in water and applied to a wire or masking tape sculpture form.Paper clay has a neater, more professional finish.Your sculpture form needs to be prepared.
Step 9: You can spread the clay with a knife or your fingers.
You should be able to spread the paper clay directly onto the form for a smooth finish. If you were using paper mache strips, you would coat the form in clay.If you prefer to use thicker clay and sculpt with your fingers, follow the instructions above for adding extra flour to create a thicker consistency. You can use your fingers, a spoon, and any other tools to coat your sculpture form in paper clay. The first layer should be set.You can use more paper clay if you want to build a tough outer coating.
Step 10: Add more layers.
In places where you want your sculpture to be thick, apply extra layers of clay.Let the layers set, and add more as needed. You can add layers to your sculpture form. The heavier your sculpture is, the more you add.
Step 11: You can create detail with your fingers.
If you're sculpting a face, the paper clay will allow you to add detail around the eyes, nose and mouth.Continue sculpting until you are happy with the result.
Step 12: Before painting, let the clay dry.
It will be hard after a day or two.Don't apply paint until it's completely dry.Paper clay can be used with any paint or varnish.
Step 13: Store leftover clay in a container.
It will not be able to drying out between uses. The clay will stay in the container for several weeks.
