Coordinate outfits and hold your hair up.It's easy to make a 90's nostalgia accessory in about 30 minutes. You can either sew it up by hand or use a sewing machine. It is perfect if you have more fabric lying around.
Step 1: Cut the elastic.
Use elastic that is between 1/2 inch and 2 inches wide.If your hair is thick, it should be about 10 cm long.
Step 2: Take the fabric and measure it.
If you use 4 inches (10 cm) of elastic, your final piece of fabric should be about 20.32 cm long and 10 cm wide.If you add 1 inch to the elastic length, it will add 2 inches. There's no need to change the width of the fabric. If you want to cut along the fold, fold the longest side of the piece of fabric at about 10 cm from the edge.
Step 3: Cut along the edge of the fold with scissors.
You should always cut a little extra fabric if you need more to sew.You can cut past your initial measurements. You can take fabric in, but you can't take it out after it's cut.
Step 4: The right sides of the fabric should be facing each other.
The printed side of the fabric should be facing inwards if you fold it in half.Pin and sew a straight line by hand or with a sewing machine, leaving a small seam allowance.
Step 5: The fabric needs to be turned right side out.
You should have a tube with two open ends after sewing. The printed side of the tube should be facing out.
Step 6: The elastic can be added.
Feed the safety pin through the fabric tube after attaching it to the end of the elastic. If you hold the other end of the elastic, it won't get pulled through the tube.Pin the elastic ends together.
Step 7: The elastic has to be sewed together.
If you want to cover the overlap and sew a diagonal through the box, you need to use stitches in the shape of a square. The x-box stitch makes sure that the elastic won't come apart when you tug on it.You can use a sewing machine or hand sew it.Don't sew the fabric to the elastic during this step.
Step 8: The ends of the fabric should be sewed together by hand.
The stitching will not be seen from the outside of the scrunchie if you use a whipstitch. To make a whipstitch, place the raw edges of the fabric on top of each other and fold the ends inward. You can sew stitches between the ends of the fabric.
Step 9: You should be able to accessorize your hair.
Tie or sew coordinating ribbons, bows and other accessories.Bells for Christmas, red and blue ribbon for the 4th of July, and dangling hearts for Valentine's Day can be used.Attach silk flowers or sequined objects.
Step 10: Test the strength.
Take your hair out and put it into a ponytail. The elastic on the scrunchie should be able to be pulled.Don't be discouraged if the scrunchie breaks. If you want to make another try sewing the elastic together.
Step 11: Wear it!
Show off your new accessory by removing your hair from your shoulders or neck.If you don't want your hair to be too loose, pull it up with an elastic and put it over the top.
