If you can figure out the first step, opening a sofa bed is fairly easy.It is very likely that your sofa bed is a traditional sofabed.Lift the handle at the front of the base to remove the bed.If your bed is newer and you can't remove the box cushions, you should look for a handle underneath the sofa. There is an additional cushion underneath the longest section of the couch.
Step 1: The back and base of the sofa have cushions on them.
Remove the cushions from the back of the sofa.Pull the box cushions out of the slot and set them down. Most of the time, the cushions on the sofa come out right away. The cushions that you sit on are called the box cushions.
Step 2: Pull the mattress out by lifting the bar at the front of the seat.
The front of the seat used to be where the box cushions were. There is a metal handle or bar.Pull it up and out at the same time. The bed frame should come down.
Step 3: Put the base down and unfold the bed.
Pull the bed out as far as you can.Set the base down when you can no longer pull it out.Pull the folded mattress away from the sofa to open it completely. There is a lever that can be used to open the middle bar on some older beds. The lever should be pulled out when you unfold the bed to keep it unlocked. The folded section of the mattress may have fabric straps clipped to it.The mattress can't unfold inside the sofa.Press the metal pieces together to open each clip.
Step 4: Set your bed up by pulling the center bar up.
Pull the middle bar up to see if the bed locks in.Some older sofa beds have this feature.Add your pillows, bed spread, and blanket if you don't need to do this.
Step 5: Underneath the bed, look for a lever or handle.
Modern sofa beds fold in the center and use the sofa cushions as a mattress.Look under the front of the box cushions in the center for a metal lever or handle to open the sofa.Look in the back if you can't find a lever under the sofa. The lever or handle can be found at the top of the back cushions. The lever on the side of the bed is where the back meets the base.Pull the lever out and then push the back forwards to open it.
Step 6: Pull the handle up until it rotates the bed.
Press the handle inwards until you hear a click.Pull the bed upwards once the lever or handle clicks. The back of the bed and the box cushions will turn upwards as one unit.If you can't open the bed with a lever, try pulling it out or rotating it to open it.
Step 7: Release the handle of the bed if you want to keep it from moving any further.
The sofa should be rotating backwards until it stops moving. This is when the back of the sofa is close to the floor. The back of the bed is put in place when you hear a click. The back of the bed needs to be kept flat.
Step 8: To unfold the bed, lower the base of the sofa.
Simply lower the box cushions once the back of the sofa is locked in place. While the box cushions are unlocked, the back of the sofa is still in place. The box cushions should be lowered until they are in their original position. You can lay down on the bed if you wish.Prepare for sleep by adding pillows, bed spread, and blanket.
Step 9: The storage unit is under the box cushions.
There are sliding sofa beds that have an additional cushion under the bed.If you have an L-shaped bed, you can slide out the section under the box cushions. The L-shaped beds are called sectionals.
Step 10: Pull the cushion up when you get the storage unit out.
Pull the storage unit out of the box cushions. You can use the strap in the middle of the cushion to lift the additional cushion out if you can't pull it out.
Step 11: Pull the cushion out to finish the bed.
Pull your cushion out when it's lifted. The locking mechanism is automatic, so don't use too much force. The cushion will be on top of the storage unit's frame as you pull it up and out.You can put your pillows, bed spread, and blanket on top of the cushions if the cushion stays in place.
