How to paint foil faced insulation, leaving ceiling insulation exposed and painting it
The proper preparation techniques are needed if you want to paint foil-faced insulation. The foil facing on insulation is nonporous.Pre-treating the facing with a galvanized metal etching primer will help combat the problem. The foil face will accept a new finish if it is properly prepared. If you apply the paint in a particular way, you may end up with flaws in the finish coat.
Dust the foil face with a plastic brush.Dust can be wiped from the facing with sticky tack cloths.
Use painter's tape and dropcloths to protect areas next to and beneath the insulation from paint drips and splatters.
Water-based metal self-etching primer is used to coat the foil face.Smooth the wet primer with a 3- to 4-inch paintbrush to promote a smooth finish.Light pressure is applied to the brush vertically.Wait four hours for the primer to dry.
