How to Paint with Sharpies and Alcohol, What is Sharpie ink made of? Quick answer: Is Sharpie Ink Alcohol Based?

I am not talking about painting with wine, but about rubbing alcohol. If you want, you can add the wine.Don't paint with it, just drink it.Wine can be used as a paint Additive.

Wine and alcohol can be used to make awesome art.I mean alcohol and sharpies.I did not drink alcohol in the making of this craft. The fumes must be from Sharpies.

This is a very easy craft. The painting part is very easy to do.I show you how to fix it if you mess it up.You can start again if you wipe the tile off.

When I got my supplies, I saw that there was a lot of alcohol and rubbing alcohol.I had 70% alcohol.I decided to do that because I was worried about the smell of alcohol with a bunch of 12 and 13 year olds. The 70% was a total bust. All was well with the crafting world when I started over. There was no difference in the smell.

The first step is to clean off your tiles.I bought my tiles at Home Depot.I assumed they had a protective strip of net on them. The tiles need to be dry.

The second step is to color your tile with coordinating Sharpie colors. They look bad until you put alcohol on them. The tile below has different colors for small areas or you can cover more of it with each color.Totally up to you!

Drop a small amount of alcohol onto the colored tile with your paint brush, straw or dropper. The alcohol starts to blur the colors.I focused on the areas where the colors met so that the lines wouldn't be blurry.Stop and look at the tile after dropping some alcohol on it.Do you see spots that need water?Add one. But!Too much alcohol should not be added to the tile.In a minute, I will show you why.

You can stop and let the tile dry if you are happy with the amount of alcohol blurring. You can be an artist like me and be interested in the colors.I thought pulling the paint brush through the colors would ruin the whole thing. But, it did not.Her tile was different than the others.See below.

She used red, yellow and purple sharpies.I have to tell the truth. When I watched her make it, I was like, "Oh my God, that is going to be so bad, and I'll have to pretend to like it when she's done".Guess what?It is my favorite. It is a completely different look than mine. Her colors are more subdued than mine. There are many meanings to that sentence.

If you choose to use a paint brush to paint your tiles, you must let them dry when you are done.Go look at them after 30 minutes.

Did they come out weird with a washed out spot where you can see the lines from your Sharpie?Don't worry, I did that as well.I am pretty sure it means you added too much alcohol.

It is an easy fix.If you want to get the blurring going again, add a little more alcohol and some Sharpies. If you have added a lot of alcohol to your body, this is not what you should do.Adding more alcohol to a problem caused by too much alcohol is not a good idea.We are talking about painting tiles.

The last step is to seal the tiles. These are delicate and can be used as anything but pretty to look at.

That is what the Krylon is for.The can tells you to spray it on and then let it dry.You can read about how to seal painted tiles in a post I wrote. The tiles might not be strong enough for you.

This craft is easy since I have shown you what to avoid. You are welcome! They are very high impact. These would be great to make and sell.

What are you going to do with the tiles? You can make coasters, tile a bench, mirror or frame them and hang them as art.I think coasters are the best.Attach a piece of felt to the bottom with hot glue.

There is a document.

I am not sure how lacquer does in the even.I would like to know if baking mugs will cure the design that has been made with a Sharpie.

I'm Hi.After drawing on the tiles with a clear lacquer, I sprayed them. The tiles had pictures on them. Will baking them in the oven help set the ink?I rubbed alcohol and used permanent makers.I drew on them when that was dried.

This is a great way to show my granddaughters how to make something.Thank you for the information.Perfectly presented.

Sharpies and alcohol are being used to make a faux stained glass.I colored the spaces with a liquid leading. It was applied to alcohol.Right now, this is far away.Oh!I am using glass from a picture frame. The eye screws were attached to the back of the fishing line. There is a fishing line attached to a cup. That is the plan anyway.I will use a UV Protectant and a final seal.Cross your fingers!!

Hi there!I used a glazed ceramic tile.I believe they are.33 cents each at the hardware store.Really cheap!

Hi Cynthia! It is appropriate for where you are laying them if you seal them. You can check with a pottery place to see if they can be fired. That could work.If you do, I would love to hear about it.

I make stained glass.I will try it because I have too much leftover glass.I hope it works.I enjoy crafting.

Hi Jane! That is great!I am happy to hear that you are trying them with your class. If you wait 24 hours between the alcohol part and the sharpie part, I think you will be fine.

Hi!I'm going to try this with my class. Is it possible to do the alcohol part 24 hours later?

I don't think Hairspray would work because it has a lot of alcohol in it.It would probably cause the sharpies to work again.

What will they be used for?If it's just something to look at, you can try to get a smooth layer of mod podge, but if it is coasters, something that needs to be washed, it really needs a good seal.Let me know how you do.

I am making these for my dad.Is it possible to put something on top of it?

I am not sure how well other markers would work, since I only tried it with Sharpies.Let me know if you like it.I would love to see what you make.

I found out that Everclear is 95 percent alcohol, so it may work.I would try it out.

At science camp 20 years ago, you could tie dye t-shirts or pants with alcohol and sharpies. The color doesn't bleed as much as it does on tiles, so I'd go for a little less of a color punch in the face at least until you get a feel for how much the colors bleed.

Trudii, I like your attitude as well.Wine and alcohol have an obvious benefit. You are relaxing your hand.Obviously!

Hey, Carole!I have never used it on paper. You can play around with it and see what you get.Let me know!I would love to see what you come up with.

There is a difference between 71% and 90%.I didn't think it mattered. When I make more, I will keep it in mind.Is there a way to make the water sprayers better or different?I agree with you on wine and alcohol. It's good to not be so stiff when painting.

Hello, Madalyn! It doesn't work as well as the majority. You don't get the same effect with 70% alcohol.

Hello Maryann!I am not sure if I have tried that. The paper is too thin to handle rubbing alcohol.Something thicker, like a card stock, with less alcohol?Let me know if you try it.

Hi Andria! After applying alcohol, the tiles don't take long to seal.Give them an hour? You have to wait about 24 hours between coats if you use the Krylon to seal them.It takes some time. You want to give the Krylon a chance to cure itself.

Hey there!I tried it on canvas and it wasn't the same as the tiles. The canvas absorbs a lot of Sharpie. You get some effect. If you really want to do it on canvas, give it a try.Try to put some Mod Podge on the canvas first. That could help.

I did not wait long between coloring them and using alcohol, but I don't think it would make a difference.I am so happy that you liked the post.If you do try them, please send me pictures.!

You can make your own alcohol ink.I have small plastic bottles with spray tops.Purchase a pack of cheap felt tip pens and rubber gloves.Cut the felt core to fit your bottles.Add all the bits to your bottle and top it off with rubbing alcohol. You can get some alcohol ink at a fraction of the cost by liding on a gentle shake. When taking the pens apart, make sure you wear gloves. It took a lot of scrubbing to get my hands clean.

I have a question about the time between coloring the tiles and adding alcohol. Is it a bad idea to wait too long?Excellent ideas thanks for the post.

Hello Marilyn!I am happy that it worked out for you.I would love to see what you made.Thank you for stopping by!Marybeth.

I enjoyed taking a class using alcohol ink. When pricing the ink, I lost enthusiasm.I saw your post using markers.I bought markers at Dollar Tree.I want to try other materials.Thanks.

Great, joy!I hope they have fun with it.Give them a quick coat of mod podge if you can't seal them.It will give it some protection, but it won't be water resistant.Have fun!Marybeth.

I am going to use this idea with my children's church class because they love to be messy with markers.Joy, thanks for the great tips.

Hi Elizabeth! If you are going to use it as a trivet, I would give you a try.I might use the tiles to put something hot on.If you are getting a dark line of concentrated, you can use a q tip or paint brush to blur it.If you don't like something, you can always try again. If you want to start over, you can wipe it off with dish soap and water.Have fun!I want to see how they come out.Marybeth.

How should the tiles be sealed and used as a trivet for hot dishes?I get a dark line of concentrated color when I apply alcohol.Thank you again, Elizabeth!!

It comes out pretty when I try it on glass ornaments.Give it a try, there is more of a stained glass effect.Good luck! Thanks, Marybeth.

Is it possible to use the same method on glass as you did on the tile?I have a pretty glass vase that I would like to use.
