How To Plan a House Move

Remember the old adage, "plan to fail" if you are moving a house or apartment.A poorly planned move will cost you more money and will mean that the unpacking at the other end will be more of a chore than pleasure. There are a few rules to follow.

Step 1: If you want to get rid of unnecessary possessions, removal companies will move items from a basement or attic that haven't been opened in a while.

If you know when you are going to move, it is worth the time to sift through stuff that you will never use and give it to the local charity shop.

Step 2: You can either hire plastic crates or purchase your own storage boxes, tape and bubble wrap.

You can collect boxes that are being thrown out at the local supermarket if you are working to a tight budget.

Step 3: Take your time to mark each box with marker pens.

It will be going into the room. The key items in the box are the bathroom, Bedroom 1, Bedroom 2 and Kitchen. There is nothing more frustrating than losing a box in your new home and having to open other boxes that you would not have opened.

Step 4: If you have residents parking, you may need to speak to a local council and suspend the parking bay to allow access for the removal vans.

It's a good idea to do this a few weeks before your move. You might have to do this at your destination address as well.

Step 5: Make sure you check your insurance and all utilities before you move.

Step 6: If you can afford it, you should pay for a cleaning service to clean your house when you leave.

Managing a move and moving in at the other end is enough stress to cope with, let alone trying to give your previous house a spring clean.
