There is a natural style of dreadlocks that requires little upkeep. As your hair grows and you go about your daily life, you may need to retwist your dreads. It's easy to start retwisting, but you can improve the result with some preparation and a good pre-wash.
Step 1: It's a good idea to remove unnecessary hair.
If you have to retwist an entire head, you should start at the nape of the neck.A row of dreads across the base of the neck can be removed with clips.
Step 2: The base of the lock has hair on it.
Take a single dreadlock and place it between your thumb and forefinger, then apply a little dread wax or gel to your fingers. If you want to entangle the main lock of already twisted hair, you need to twist this hair between your fingers.Pull the hair away from the side of the lock that is already twisted.Put pressure on the dread as you roll it.It should not cause the hair to break. If you feel hair snapping while twisting, that's normal. You can reform the dread by matting it.You might need to re-dread your hair from scratch if you have Dreads that have come out of their ropes.
Step 3: The dreadlock is rolled by the palm.
The lock is ready to be palm rolled after it has been finger rolled.Pick up the finger twisted hair between your palms after applying a little dreadlock wax or gel.Roll the hair between your palms as you slide the lock down. You may need to palm roll each lock several times for the firmest dreads.People with loose hair are more likely to be stubborn.Be careful not to hurt the person whose hair you're retwisting, in some cases you may need to roll with extra firm pressure. The finished locks can be pinned out of the way if they have been palm rolled.
Step 4: You can twist the dreads by re-pining your hair.
If the dreads at the nape of the neck have been retwisted, you can remove your pins to release the next layer of hair. The hair that's hanging in the way can be pinned to the side.Retwist the dreads one at a time with your fingers and palms. To ensure no locks are missed, you should work at about an inch of scalp per row/layer.
Step 5: Go to the front of the head.
Continue to twist your dreads in this fashion until you reach the front of the head. When you reach the front of the head, you don't have to worry about keeping your hair out.
Step 6: If necessary, dry the dreads.
After retwisting, some waxes or dreadlock gels become set in place with the application of light to moderate heat. Most dreads will be dry in less than 30 minutes. You can allow your hair to air dry if the hair dryer is not accessible. If any of the products you used on your dreadlocks are heat activated, you should consider using a gentle heat.
Step 7: Retwisting is needed for dreads.
As time goes on, your hair will grow at the base of your head, creating loose hair on your dreads.Your locks may become messy in other cases. If your dreads have any of these features, it's time to get a new one.You can either retwist the base of all the dreadlocks you are working on, or you can only work on one side.To outline the square perimeter of the lock, use a rattail comb.Remove the hair from the surrounding area. The dread can become fuzzy or stuck to another lock if this is not changed.
Step 8: Pick up your supplies.
If you want to retwist your dreads most effectively, you should use products to strengthen and refresh the hair. You'll want a rattail comb, clips, a towel, and dreadlock friendly gel or wax.A dreadlock gel can be used to help lock the hair of your dreads into ropes of hair. This kind of product can be used to help maintain your dreads. Some people suffer from dry hair.If you are in this situation, you may want to use a cleansing product.
Step 9: It's a good idea to position the locks for comfort.
It can take a long time before you complete your job.To ensure the best retwisting, choose a work environment that is easy for you to work in.The ideal work height depends on your height and body type. You want the head you are working on to be close to the chest. The person you're working on should sit in a straight-backed chair. This makes them easy to maneuver and puts them at the right height.
Step 10: You should wash your hair.
You don't have to use a specially formulated shampoo for dreadlocks.Use your fingers to massage the hair on your head. You're ready to rinse after the dreads have been washed. You should not wash your dreads for at least two weeks after having them done. You should choose a low lather cleanser for your hair. Many people with dreads have dry hair.If you do, you should use a cleanser that is formulated for dry hair. You might want to use a clean nylon to keep your dreads out of your washing machine. It can help keep your locks from coming apart.
Step 11: Add conditioner if you want.
If you don't use conditioner on your hair, you can improve its strength, softness, and luster.Put your hair conditioner in your hands and massage it into your dreadlocks.Do not replace locks that are less than 3 months old.The best results come from following the label recommendations of your conditioner. You should let the conditioner set for a while. You should rinse the conditioner from your hair, turn off the shower, and wring out excess water from the locks after you've finished conditioning. Some people choose to skip conditioning because it can loosen their locks.
Step 12: Grease can be prevented with a towel.
If you're not careful, your dreadlocks can accumulate a lot, and this can cause a problem down the neck. After rinsing out the conditioner, keep the washed head bent so the drips don't fall onto the shower floor.Next, put a towel on the base of the neck.Hold the towel in place with your hands after blotting the dreads.Straighten the head. You will get caught in the towel you are holding at the base of the neck if the excess water trickles down the head.Dry portions of the towel should be used after the hair has mostly stopped dripping.
Step 13: The dreadlocks should be dry.
You can leave your hair smelling wet if you don't dry it completely. If you want to make sure your dreads are dry, you should use a hair dryer. It is possible to allow your hair to air dry before retwisting, though this might take some time. The hair that is wet stretches more than the dry hair.If you wait until the dreadlocks are completely dry, you may have the best and most consistent results.Due to the thickness of dreads, it can sometimes be difficult to see the inside of a lock. You might want to dry for 10 minutes more than you think is necessary.
