One way to create a seat for a chair with rails around the perimeter is to rush it.The materials for rushing include twisted leaves and strands of paper. The strands of rush are stretched across the seat and looped around the rails to fill it.There are pieces of corrugated cardboard used for padding. There is information on how to rush a chair.
Step 1: The old rush seat can be removed with a utility knife.
Do not damage the frame of the chair.Remove tacks with pliers.
Step 2: The rush should be cut into lengths of 30 feet.
The rush comes in a coil of 100 feet.
Step 3: Shake off any excess water by dipping each rush in a bucket of warm water.
Step 4: If you follow the tip for filling in a gap on a seat, put it to the inside left rail near the front leg.
Step 5: Wrap it around the front rail and then the left rail to make it tight against the chair leg.
Step 6: Pull it across the seat.
Step 7: It should be tight against the right front chair leg if you loop it around the front rail.
Step 8: Take the strand to the rail.
It is tight against the back right leg if you loop it around the rail.
Step 9: You can loop the rail around the left rail and back rail to make it tight against the back left leg.
Step 10: Continue the sequence until you reach the end of the piece of rush, if you bring it to the front rail.
The rushes need to be knocked against each other with a wooden block and hammer. To prevent them from slipping, install temporary tacks through the last rush on all sides.
Step 11: Cut off the excess by tying another piece of rush to the end.
The knot should not be visible under the seat.
Step 12: After weaving around the perimeter of the seat, place corrugated cardboard as padding.
The end of the rush should be held by a temporary tack. The side rails are nearly as long as the 4 triangles of cardboard. The top corner of each triangle should be cut off.The sides of the triangle should be put into the rush near the legs.
Step 13: Remove the temporary tack, tie on another piece of rush and continue in the same fashion over the cardboard until you completely cover the side rails with rush.
Step 14: To fill in the rest of the front and back rails, change the weaving pattern to a figure 8.
Place a temporary tack on the side rail and then thread the rush up through the center opening of the seatWhile you finish the seat, the temporary tack holds the woven part in place. The rush can be passed over the front rail, through the center opening, and back to the train station. The front and back rails have to be filled in before the figure-8 pattern can be repeated.
Step 15: Remove all temporary tacks and tack the rush to the bottom of the rail.
