The grid method is one way of transposing images from one piece of paper to another without the use of a computer. It's simple and can be used by people with different levels of drawing ability.
Step 1: Pick a picture.
This image is from a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon and will be used as an example. If you're using this method for the first time or you don't have a lot of drawing experience, choosing a simple cartoon image like the one shown is ideal.
Step 2: Pick your drawing paper.
It needs to be scaled to the size of your print. The final product will be the same size as the reference image because it uses a 1:1 scale drawing. You may need to scale the size of your drawing up or down depending on the image. To scale the drawing size up 2x, the paper should be 17 X 22 (43 cm x 56 cm).To scale the drawing size down, the paper needs to be 4.25" x 5.5" (10.7 cm x 14 cm).
Step 3: The edges of the reference picture should be marked at equal intervals.
The example image uses one-inch intervals, which is a good size to use, however your intervals may have to be slightly larger or smaller depending on the size of your paper. You should make sure to have the same marks on the edges of your paper. The example image has a quarter-inch (0.64 cm) marking at both the upper and lower half of the drawing, since the height is 8.6 in.The extra half-inch is accounted for by these two markings.Depending on the size of your paper, you may have to do this as well.
Step 4: The marks should be connected with a ruler.
The name of the grid method is due to the connected lines forming a pattern.
Step 5: The same pattern can be made on your drawing paper.
You can connect the edges at equal intervals using a ruler to create a grid like you did with the original image. You should only draw the markings and grid lines lightly so that you can erase them later. You should have something similar to the image provided.
Step 6: Number the boxes on the drawing paper.
You can easily keep track of which box is in the original image and which is on the drawing paper. To create a calendar, start with the top left corner and work your way down.Remember to press lightly with your pencil on your drawing paper so that you can easily erase the numbers at the end.
Step 7: Start drawing.
Re-create what's inside of the box on your drawing paper by looking at it in your reference picture. It's important to start with the boxes that include the general outline of your image in order to make sure that it will connect properly. You should use a pencil to make adjustments to your drawing.
Step 8: You can add the details.
You can begin to add smaller details once the outline is complete. It's up to you to decide how detailed your picture is, because you don't have to include all of the details that your reference image does.
Step 9: Remove the grid and numbers from the drawing.
Re-trace your drawing with a pen or fineliner after you've finished it.To get rid of the grid lines and numbers, use an eraser. If you smudge the ink from your pen or fineliner, you need to wait until it is completely dry.
