One person doesn't win an election whether you are a first timer wanting to get involved in student government or a career politician running for Senator. If you want to get elected, you need a well organized team with a cohesive goal on your side.
Step 1: A clear message is what you want.
While there may be a lot of issues you are concerned with, you need to focus on one thing and that is the message. You will help your team maintain focus and keep its goals clear by establishing a "Brand" for voters. The more invested a team is, the more engaged they will be.The better your results will be, the more engaged your team is.
Step 2: It's important to focus on transparency and accountability.
If you are to succeed, your team needs to be open and honest.Communication and success are dependent on trust. The left hand will not succeed if it doesn't know what the right hand is doing.Always take responsibility for your mistakes, and lead by example.
Step 3: The chain of command needs to be established.
You will be the ultimate authority in your campaign. You should work to earn the respect of your team rather than taking it for granted. You will want to establish clear chains of command.Your campaign manager is usually your second-in-command.Make sure your chain of command is clear.Everyone should know who they are reporting to in your campaign.Be authoritative, not authoritarian.
Step 4: Keep an eye on the prize.
As stress increases, it is easy to lose track of your goals.Staying on message is important. It is necessary to appeal to voters and also keep the team's vision clear.Success will follow if the team is engaged and on message.
Step 5: Search for your campaign manager.
The first thing you need to do is find your right-hand man or woman. If you are running for student government or a small municipal position, you should designate someone who has authority to handle situations and make decisions in your absence. You should both trust and respect this person.Your campaign manager should have the same goals as you, but they should also be willing to speak their mind and stand up to you if necessary.Your campaign manager needs to be a fair leader that your other staff will respect, and must have a complete understanding of your team's goals and vision. In your absence, all of your additional campaign staff should report to your campaign manager.
Step 6: Someone who is reliable as a treasurer.
There will be expenses for the smallest campaign.Someone who is good at saving money will be very useful.A financially responsible person should be in charge of authorizing expenditures.Someone who always has a knack for finding a good deal or talking their way into a bargain is a great choice.Saving a little on simple expenses like signs and flyers can go a long way. This is a great role for a person who wants to help, but not the best person.
Step 7: An engaging event coordination is what you should design.
Someone with good organizational and networking skills is what you'll want to find. You need someone with a knack for planning and getting other people on board to plan a rally, town hall discussion, or community event.Your campaign manager should work with your event coordinators.A responsible person who always throws the best parties is a good candidate. They require both passion and flexibility.
Step 8: Find a person who works with volunteers.
Other people might want to volunteer for your campaign.Volunteers can help raise money, spread awareness, and take care of campaign tasks. To keep them all on the same page you need a volunteer.Again, you will want someone with good organizational and networking skills.A clear understanding of the campaign message and vision is required by your volunteer coordination. They will have to know it and be responsible for giving it to others.Volunteers who have patience and the ability to motivate other people are very valuable.
Step 9: Your campaign manager should be hired.
A campaign manager can help with policy. They need to have strong organization skills, work well under pressure and be willing to say no to people. The campaign manager may be a professional with a track record of successfully managing candidates and campaigns. It's not necessary for an outside campaign manager to agree with your platform. It helps if they do.You need to have open communication with your campaign manager.Your campaign manager needs to be a fair leader that your other staff will respect, and must have a complete understanding of your team's goals and vision.Your campaign manager should be in charge of every other role.
Step 10: Look for a reliable treasurer.
Political campaigns and large campaigns have the same amount of economic operations. You need someone to keep a record of your campaign's finances. An experienced accountant is needed. They need to be well organized and able to keep good records.Your treasurer will not be responsible for raising money since your campaign is bigger. If you have a legal obligation to maintain accurate and transparent records, make sure the person who is keeping them is qualified. The treasurer won't be integrated with the rest of the team, but they will work closely with your event coordinators. It's important that the trio have a good working relationship.
Step 11: Choose a person to help raise money.
A person with specific responsibilities for raising money is what you'll want. They will handle phone drives, solicitations, and a lot of other things. They'll report revenue to your treasurer and help organize your event. They need to be outgoing and organized. The individual should not be afraid to ask for favors or take initiative. There are no wallflowers here.
Step 12: Hire a person to help organize your event.
The person who will plan your rallies, handle logistics for your events, and keep all of your vendors and local contractors in line is this person. They will work closely with your financer and treasurer. The person you want to work with should be strong- willed and goal driven.Someone with both passion and flexibility is what you want.
Step 13: You should choose a legal advisor.
If you don't have an entire legal team, you'll need at least one legal advisor. If you are in a national race, you need to understand and adapt to election laws. The legal advisor will rarely work with the other staff. The person that gets the job done thoroughly is the best for this role.Outside hired counsel will often be your legal advisor.
Step 14: An advertising director should be hired.
Sending out mailers and putting up posters won't suffice for most large campaigns. You will need to buy advertising on radio and television.Your polling and public relations team should work with your advertising director.Your advertising director needs to have a clear understanding of your message. They are responsible for getting the message out. Before any ad is aired or posted, your advertising director should report to you and your campaign manager.
Step 15: Search for your campaign's polling and public relations advisor.
You'll need to keep an eye on the electorate during large campaigns.A skilled Polling and PR advisor can help. The person will keep an eye on the wind and help you with your message.A good fit for this role is a person who is also good with analytic skills. It's good for a pollster to be less involved in a campaign. You want data that is accurate and free of bias.
Step 16: There is a media relations team and a press secretary.
When you can't be, you need someone to be the public face and voice of the campaign.A Media Relations team that understands the message is what you want.People involved in the media should be good with other people and not prone to gaffes.Staying on message is important. You want people who are good on their feet but won't use their imaginations. There is charisma.A good face is given to your campaign by a likeable Press Secretary and Media Relations team.
Step 17: You can choose your campaign's volunteer coordinater.
You'll find new volunteers as your campaign moves from place to place.Grassroots volunteers are the most important part of a campaign. All of them will be kept on the same page by your volunteer leader.Again, you will want someone with good organizational and networking skills.A clear understanding of the campaign message and vision is required by your volunteer coordinators. They will be responsible for giving it to others.Volunteers who have patience and the ability to motivate other people are very valuable.
Step 18: Your personal assistant should be hired.
With so much going on, you will need some help.A good personal assistant can keep you informed of scheduling changes, make sure you get to eat and sleep, and screen your calls. It's important to get along well for this role.If your personal assistant is willing to be strong and get what they need from other people, then they should defer to you.A person that understands your needs is a good choice for a personal assistant.
