It is easy to shift if you know the basics. There are features that you need to know. There are many different models of Mercruiser remote controls. The instructions are for a standard Mercruiser remote control.
Step 1: Before starting the motor, look over your remote control.
The handle has a locking mechanism. If you're equipped, check out the trim buttons.
Step 2: Don't shift before you think.
It's a major concern. The propeller will spin once you shift.A spinning propeller can hurt or kill a person.
Step 3: When a swimmer is in the water, never start the motor.
Step 4: Let your passengers know that you are about to shift.
Step 5: Before shifting, look around your boat.
Step 6: Don't forget to plan ahead.
Is it clear?
Step 7: Make sure your vessel is clear of obstructions at sea or firmly tie it to a strong dock if you are practicing shifting.
Step 8: The control handle can be used to shift and amplify.
There are three shift positions on the handle. There is a forward and a reverse. The handle is usually straight UP.
Step 9: The handle should be in the up position.
Most remote controls have a protection switch. If the shift is in gear, the motor should not start.Make sure the shifter handle is neutral if the motor won't crank.
Step 10: Place your hand on the handle.
The Shift Locking Mechanism can be felt under the handle. The locking mechanism needs to be lifted with your fingers. The engine will accelerate if you shift past the forward detent.rottling should never be done while tied up to a dock.If you are untied and ready to move forward, throttle up.
Step 11: Only advance the handle to theTENT position for practicing purposes.
Step 12: Lift the Locking Mechanism with your fingers and push the handle forward until you feel the FORWARD DETENT.
The gears will grind if you shift too slow.
Step 13: Lift the locking mechanism and use a firm action when practicing in and out of forward gear.
Step 14: Pull the handle back into the reverse detent position to practice shifting from neutral to reverse.
Step 15: If you are at sea and clear of all vessels, shift into forward detent and let the boat "idle" forward for a while.
Make sure that your vessel is safe to accelerate and throttle up by taking a good look around.
Step 16: While steering, slowly push the handle forward and accelerate the vessel.
Step 17: The bow of most boats will rise when you push the handle forward.
The boat will "plane-off" and ride fast on top of the water as it speeds up the bow.Slowly pull back on the handle until the boat drops off and returns to in-gear.Don't shift into neutral until the boat slows down.Shift at dead idle speed.
