An outboard motor is the only means of power for some small boats.There are times when outboards are installed on boats as a backup.The motor is simple.The motor will propel the boat through the water if you start it.Depending on the type of motor you have, you can either pull start it or need a key.You can use the motor to drive the boat until you are ready to stop.
Step 1: Sit next to the motor.
Plug in the kill switch if you sit close to it.To reach the pull string without standing, you will need to sit close to the motor.You should not start the motor if you are seated.A kill switch is a small piece of the motor that allows it to start and run.The kill switch has a cable on it.The kill switch is removed if the cable is pulled.If you fall off the boat, this protects you from being injured by the propeller.
Step 2: Don't let the engine run.
The choke valve can be used to restrict the amount of air coming into the engine.You can reduce the amount of air in the fuel by turning the valve handle.The air-fuel mixture will have more fuel than normal.The engine will start if the fuel concentration is higher.The engine is warm.You don't need to choke it because it has been running recently.
Step 3: The motor needs to be neutral.
The gearshift should be set to neutral.The motor won't start unless it is neutral.The boat won't accelerate as soon as the engine starts.Before starting the motor, you should have the propeller in the water.If the propeller starts turning unexpectedly, this improves the flow of fuel to the engine and protects everyone on board.
Step 4: The handle needs to be pulled.
The pull rope has a handle on it.Pull the handle back until there is no slack in the rope.Pull the handle back quickly when the rope is tight.The process should be repeated if the motor does not start.Check the gas and choke if the motor doesn't start after a few pulls.Before trying again, let the motor rest for two minutes.
Step 5: The engine should be tilted down.
The propeller should be in the water if the electric start engines are tilted down.This will allow the fuel to flow into the engine.Keeping the engine tilted down will keep the propeller out of the water.Occasionally, boats are equipped with fully electric outboards.The procedure for starting a motor with an electric start is the same as it is for a fuel driven motor.
Step 6: The key needs to be inserted.
Important features, such as the gearshift, need the key in the ignition before they can operate.If the kill switch is necessary, put the key in the ignition slot.You should be able to shift the engine to neutral.
Step 7: Put the motor in neutral.
An electric motor can have a manual gearshift.You can move the throttle to the neutral position.This will allow you to start the engine.
Step 8: Turn the key.
Most engines start when you turn the key to the On position.Some engines have a start button.The key or button should be released once the engine starts.
Step 9: Aim the boat.
You will lose your ability to steer the boat if you cut power to the engine.If you want to go in a certain direction, point the boat in that direction.Make sure there are no people in the area.There are docks in your path.
Step 10: The engine should be shifted to neutral.
The propeller will stop turning if you put the engine back into neutral.The thrust that pushes the boat forward is stopped by this.Even when the engine is in neutral, it is still running.
Step 11: The engine should be shut down.
To stop the engine, turn the key off.Close the engine if you don't have a key.The kill switch cable can be removed once the engine is off.
