In order to create and keep healthy, dreadlocks take advance planning, preparation, and frequent maintenance. If you want to start dreads, you need to consider your hair type and method.Caucasian or Asian individuals commonly use the hairstyle of dreadlocks, which is designed for black hair.
Step 1: Place your hair in small squares.
You will need a friend to help you with this method, they should use their hands or a comb to part your hair.It is up to you how many squares your friend makes. Each square will become a dreadlock, with smaller squares making thinner dreads. It depends on what you want, though 1- or 2-inch squares are preferable.Determine what size you want.It is possible to create dreads on hair that is at least 3 inches long.If your hair is less than three inches, grow it before starting dreads or use another method.
Step 2: If your hair is straight, back comb it.
The segment of hair contained within each square should be grasped by the individual dreads their hair.Use a dread comb to comb the hair back towards your head.As the hair builds up towards the roots, your friend can move farther from your head until they back comb the entire strand of hair. You can buy a dread comb through major online retailers. You can buy them at your local drug store, department store or WalMart.
Step 3: If you have naturally curly hair, don't back comb it.
African hair does not need to be backcombed since it usually doesn't look good.Start off your dreads by sectioning the hair in a square, applying product and using a dread comb to twist the entire section of hair, from the roots to the ends.
Step 4: For each square, repeat.
You will need to wait while your friend back combs the hair in each square on your head, and there could be as many as 30.As they back comb your hair, they can also roll your dreads between their fingers. The hair will be tightly packed in each dread. When you create dreads, be aware that you will lose length. The finished dreads may only be 3 inches long if you lose 1/3 or 1/2 of your hair length.
Step 5: Each dread should be fastened with two rubber bands.
The end of the dread should be secured with a small rubber band once it has been backcombed. In order to prevent the base of the dread from unraveling, a small rubber band can be secured around the root of each dread.African hair has a texture that makes rubber bands unnecessary. The dread should be kept from unraveling by the curliness of your hair.Check an office supply store and buy the smallest rubber band you can find.
Step 6: Apply a wax.
It is time to wax the dreads after they have been backcombed and have rubber bands at the tip and base.Your friend should apply a dread wax to your new hair. The loose ends on each dread will be restrained by this.It is best to use wax that does not contain petrol. You might be able to buy dread wax at the same place you bought the dread comb.Drug stores, beauty parlors, and large department stores are online retailers. It will take dreads 3–4 months to reach maturity after having been Waxed.
Step 7: Divide the squares into strands.
The backcombing method requires you to cut your hair into multiple small square sections.Once the squares are made, divide the hair from them into two parts.Small hair clips or rubber bands can be used to separate the sections. If you want to begin dreadlocks in long hair, you can use a twist. If your hair is short, as little as 4 inches (10 cm) will suffice. While twists are an effective way to start dreads in black hair, they don't work well in Caucasian hair.
Step 8: You can coat each strand with dread cream or wax.
This thick gel-like substance will help the large strands of hair cohere, and will encourage the dreadlocks to form more quickly. Before you start twisting the strands, make sure that they are completely covered with dread cream. You don't need to apply additional cream to each strand. You can buy dread cream or wax at a salon, online, or in a store.
Step 9: Then twist each strand clockwise.
You are ready to twist the strands at this point.Take each strand of hair and twist it clockwise. You can twist the strands if you twisted them from the same square of hair. One strand should be passed over the other two or three times. This will make a large natural hair spiral.Once the two strands of hair have been twisted together, use a hair clip or rubber band to secure the lock at the tip and base. The dreadlocks will form due to the different directions that the strands have been twisted.
Step 10: The strands should be given time to grow into dreadlocks.
The strand twist method of forming dreadlocks can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to blend together and give the appearance of a single dreadlock. The dreadlocks should be washed once or twice a week.It is important to keep the locks tightly rolled. If dreadlocks start to fall at the ends, re-roll the dread so that the strands stay tightly woven.Re-doing the strand twists will shorten the time needed for dreadlocks to form.New hair can be dreadlocked by twisting the hair at the roots.
Step 11: Continue growing your hair until it is about 25 cm long.
The method of forming dreadlocks does not work with shorter hair.Your hair needs to be long in order to form dreadlocks. It can take at least three years for naturally made dreadlocks to form.Individuals with curly, natural, black hair can only have natural dreadlocks.Individuals with Asian hair need to visit a hair salon in order to get dreadlocks.
Step 12: You should wash your hair.
If you want to have natural dreadlocks, your hair needs to be clean. It's not true that hair needs to be unwashed in order for dreads to form.Too much of your hair's own oils will prevent it from forming dreadlocks. You should take a break from washing your hair for two weeks after you start growing dreadlocks. After a couple of weeks, wash your hair once or twice a week.
Step 13: Allow your hair to tangle.
You need to resist the urge to brush or comb your hair in order to form natural dreadlocks. It is difficult to predict the growth form of natural dreadlocks, unlike other methods.Minor adjustments can be made to naturally formed dreads. If you have a thin dreadlock, you can combine it with rubber bands and dread cream to form a larger dread.
