Different cultures all around the world have their own style of dreadlocks. If you dread your hair while it's short, you'll be able to grow it out later on.You can either use a brush or a comb. You can start your dreads before your hair is even an inch long by following the proper techniques and using the right materials.
Step 1: Use a soft bristled brush to make small circular motions.
When the hair starts to form into balls, brush circles in a clockwise motion. It should take about a minute or two.Once a ball of hair forms, move onto another section of the hair to make dreadlocks.Coarse hair is best brushed with the brushing method.A sponge brush can be used to create dreads and curls in someone's hair.A sponge brush works better on short hair than a bristle brush.
Step 2: Cream or wax should be applied to the balls.
Once the hair is spun into small balls, you should apply a dread wax or cream to keep them in place.Rub the cream on the dreads with your hand.Jamaican Mango & Lime is one of the popular brands of dread wax.
Step 3: The dreads should be secured with a hair clip or elastic band.
The dreads can be held down with elastic bands or small hair clips. The elastic band should be applied near the root of the hair.Don't apply the bands too tightly or it will make the person uncomfortable. You can skip this step if your hair is medium to coarse. The hair won't fall.
Step 4: Allow the locks to sit for at least three hours.
You can dry your hair with a hair dryer.Make sure that they are no longer wet by touching them. You can take your hair clips or elastic bands off once they've been dry and set.If you have access to a hooded dryer, use it instead of a hair dryer as it will work more effectively. The dreads may come loose if you don't sleep or play with your hair for three hours.
Step 5: The hair has to be separated into squares.
Take a small portion of hair and comb it.Continue to make 1x1 inch (2.54 cm x 2.54 cm) squares all over the head. The dreadlocks on each section of hair will be different. The end of the hair can be secured with a rubber band or a small hair clip. This is usually not required.Coarse hair lengths as short as 2 inches are ideal for twisting dreadlocks. To get the knots out, you may have to wet the hair.
Step 6: Put a loc cream on the hair.
You separated the portions with your hand, so Rub a loc cream into them. Before moving onto the next section of hair, make sure that the cream is rubbed throughout.
Step 7: The comb should be inserted at the root.
Put the rat tail comb at the root of the hair.Pull the comb until you get to the end of the hair.As you twist it, keep the hair in the teeth. When you're done with your hair, make a small dread out of it.This method is great for short hair because you don't need a lot of length. You won't need to secure the dreads with rubber bands if you apply enough loc cream.
Step 8: Continue to put dreads in rows.
Continue to create dreads across the head, spacing them out an inch apart from one another.Once you are done with a row, move onto another part of the hair.
Step 9: The dreads should be dry.
Allow your dreads to last at least three hours before touching or sleeping. You can use a hand held hair dryer. If you can, use a hair dryer instead of a hooded dryer. It works better because it gives an even air flow.
