Think of a wood knot like the one in the dog treat aisle at the pet store. If we applied paint over that bone, what would happen? The grease would go through the paint.

A knot is filled with something. The knot shows through our paint as the sap pushes its way to the surface.

We can't paint over knots that are sticky. Why?The knots will bleed through our paint.

Is there a way to stop the knots? We will talk about how to stop the knots later.

The best way to cover knots before painting is to seal the knot with several coats of a stain blocking primer.

After the Zinsser BIN Primer has been applied, the knot can be painted with two coats of quality paint.

When knots bleed through our paint, they aren't attractive and can add visual interest to stained projects.

We may want to consider using wood that does not have knots if we are building furniture from scratch. We could cut our parts to make sure we don't use knots. We need to take some extra steps to keep the knots from bleeding through the paint.

The gun causes the water to flow to the surface. The surface of the knot can be removed from the sap that flows out.Be prepared. It will be difficult to remove the hardened sap.

A quality finish for any project begins with proper sanding. That applies to knots as well. The primer has to bite into the surface of the knot.

Remember how I saidknots are stubborn? It is true. The way I stop wood knots from bleeding through paint is by applying three coats of primer.

I use a chip brush to apply primer. If you use any other brush, be careful. When foam brushes come in contact with shellac, they will break down.

I apply a second coat after the primer is dry.And then a fourth coat.If I can still see the knot, I will apply additional coats. We need to apply coats of primer until we can no longer see the knot.

I sand after the final coat is dry.I will apply another coat of primer if I sand too much.

If I am working on a new project, I will apply three coats of Zinsser BIN Primer to the knots and then apply a coat of latex primer.latex primer won't stop knots from bleeding through the paint. The knots will have a minimum of four coats of primer now that I need to prime the rest of the project.

If I am repairing a knot that bled through the paint on a project that has already been painted, I will not prime the entire piece. The primer we applied to the knot will be a great base for our paint.
