How To Tame a Dwarf Hamster

The most popular dwarf hamster is the Campbell's Russian Dwarf. All dwarf hamsters can be tame in the same way.If you hold him, he will be more friendly towards you, your family, and your friends.

Step 1: Allow your dwarf hamster to get used to his new environment.

You may want to hold your dwarf hamster immediately. He will need some time to get used to his cage.Give him a day or two to explore his environment and find out what's in his cage.It will be easier to tame him if he is comfortable in his cage.During this time, your dwarf hamster will learn how to move around in your home.

Step 2: Spend some time with your dwarf hamster.

When your dwarf hamster is adjusting to you and his cage, it is a good idea to not interact with him.He can either sit by his cage and watch TV or read a book. Before you tame him, he should be comfortable with your calm and quiet presence.

Step 3: Talk to your dwarf hamster.

Once your dwarf hamster has a few days to get used to you, begin talking to him.Talking to your dwarf hamster will be important since he can't see very well.He will be less likely to bite you when you pick him up if he knows your voice.Even if you don't have a dwarf hamster, it will still enjoy hearing your voice.Use a gentle voice when you talk to him.

Step 4: It's a good time to tame your dwarf hamster.

Hamsters are active at night. When he is most likely to be awake, choose a time after dinner.Give him 15 minutes to be awake before attempting to hold him.Do not wake your dwarf hamster up if he is sleeping. If you try to bite him, he will be startled and think you are a threat.Wait until he wakes up.

Step 5: You need to wash your hands.

You should wash your hands before handling your dwarf hamster.Your hamster will think your hands are food if he smells food on them. You can wash your hands with soap.

Step 6: Put your hands in the dwarf hamster's cage.

Slowly lower the cup with your hands into the cage.As you lower your hands, speak to him that you're not a threat.Make no sudden movements or loud noises as you place your hands in his cage.If you can't get your dwarf hamster to walk onto your hands, put some treats in his hands.Try using a large serving spoon if treats don't work.Don't scoop him up, hold the item on the floor and let him walk onto it.Transfer him to you after you lift him out of the cage.

Step 7: Allow your dwarf hamster to explore you.

Lift your dwarf hamster up towards you, slowly.Turn his body in your hands to face you.Looking at you will make him feel better about being lifted up.Let him crawl on you when you have him out of the cage.Exploring will make your dwarf hamster feel more comfortable with you.He climbs and crawls on you.He can crawl on you more easily if you sit or lie down.

Step 8: Hold your dwarf hamster.

It takes daily practice to destroy your dwarf hamster. For 5 minutes each time, hold him a few times a day.Your dwarf hamster will be easier to handle with daily practice.Hold him at the same time each day.It would be better if he knew when to expect you.

Step 9: You can learn the difference between biting and nibbling.

As you tame your dwarf hamster, he may bite or chew on you.If he feels threatened or scared, a dwarf hamster will bite.He may bite if he's bored or not feeling well.Nibbling is a way for a dwarf hamster to explore its environment. It wouldn't be enough to cause bleeding, but it could startle you.A bite would feel bigger than a nibble.

Step 10: If your dwarf hamster bites you, react properly.

Blow in the dwarf hamster's face if he bites you.The air will be unpleasant to him but won't hurt him.He will hear the message not to bite you.Dropping him could hurt him, even if the bite starts. It is possible to stop the biting behavior by putting some more toys in his cage.If he isn't stopping biting, you should take him to the vet for a checkup.

Step 11: Don't put your hand in the dwarf hamster's cage.

Russian dwarf hamsters are territorial. If you have a Russian dwarf hamster, he may try to bite you if he doesn't know you're nearby. When putting your hands in his cage, be careful.Your hand is large compared to his small body size.He will see your hand as a threat.
