They can make an outfit look more polished. It can be expensive to hire a professional tailor to fit trousers that are loose-fitting.It's easy to improve the fit of your pants and save money by doing it yourself. You just need to figure out where to cut and pin the pants and sew a new seam.
Step 1: Put the pants on.
Put on the pants if you want to taper them for yourself, or have the person put them on for you.The pants should be turned inside out. After sewing, you will need to draw a line on them. It's easier to cut the fabric and sew the new seam if the pants are turned inside out.
Step 2: Pinch the edges of the pants.
To find where you want to put the pants, pinch the inside and outside of them.Depending on the fit, you may need to remove a significant amount of fabric. To find the best fit, pinch the pants along the inner and outer seams. If you want to create a new seam around your knee, you should pinch the fabric on the inside and outside of the knee.
Step 3: A friend should draw a line where you want a new seam to be.
It will be difficult to draw on the pants while wearing them, so it is best to ask a friend for help. They should draw on the inside of where you are pinching the pantlegs. It is possible to mark the fabric yourself, but you will need to pinch it to get the best results.
Step 4: If you don't have anyone to help you, insert pins and draw a line.
If you don't have anyone who can help you by drawing a line where you are pinching, you can also put pins in the areas you want to taper the pant legs. You should put a pin in every 1 to 2 inches where you want the pants to be.After you remove the pants, draw a chalk line on the inner edges of the pins. The pins should be parallel to the seam.It will be easier to make a seam line after removing pants.
Step 5: Put a pair of trousers over the ones you want to taper.
Lay the pants out flat and place a pair of pants over them.Take the outline of the pants and put it on your pants. It's important to choose a pair of trousers that fit you.The fit of these pants will be replicated on your trousers.
Step 6: After drawing the lines, use a ruler to check them.
Go over any crooked spots with the chalk if you hold the ruler up against the line. You can use a ruler to check the distance from the edge of the pants to the lines.Ensuring that the right and left legs are the same size will be helped by this. The lines should be the same on both legs if they are 1.5 inches from the bottom of the trousers.
Step 7: The old stitches can be removed with a seam ripper.
Keep the pants turned inside out and use a seam ripper to cut the stitches.Run the hooked part of the seam ripper along the stitches to sever them and then gently pull apart the fabric at the seams to loosen them.Pull out the thread with your fingers. You don't have to remove all of the stitches if you are not tapering the leg.If you want to take in the seam, just remove the stitches.
Step 8: You can create a second chalk line from the first one.
Line up the raw edges after the old stitches are out. Then, draw a second chalk line from the first one.You may need to iron the fabric if it won't lay flat.
Step 9: To remove the excess fabric, cut along the second chalk line.
The new raw edge for the parts of the pants you want to taper is the second line you drew onto the fabric. The fabric should be cut along this line.To cut straight along the lines, use a sharp pair of scissors.
Step 10: The fabric should be Pin along the first line.
Place pins along the first line you drew on the fabric after you have finished cutting it.The new seam is for your trousers. To keep the fabric together while you sew, insert a pin every 3 inches along the line.Place the pins on the edge of the fabric. It will be easier to remove them as you sew.For the other lines, repeat this.
Step 11: Thread your sewing machine.
The thread on your trousers should be strong. If you are going to make the trousers slim or skinny, the seams need to be strong.Black thread for black pants is a good example of a thread color that matches the fabric.Use a denim thread for a strong option.
Step 12: The sewing machine should be set to the straight stitch setting.
It is easy to use the straight stitch for sewing seam on pantlegs. The first setting on sewing machines is usually this stitch. If you want to use the straight stitch, make sure your sewing machine is set to the recommended tension and stitch length.
Step 13: There is a straight stitch on the fabric.
You should sew along the line. From the bottom of the pantleg. If the line goes off the edge of your pants, then sew it back on.If the line goes all the way up the pantleg to the crotch, then sew it.As you go, make sure to remove the pins.If you sew over them, you may damage your sewing machine.
Step 14: You can backstitch.
To backstitch, hold down the lever on the side of your sewing machine and apply gentle pressure to the pedal. You can sew in the opposite direction if you reverse the direction of the feed dogs. For about 1 to 2 inches, backstitch.Release the lever and sew to the end of the line again. The ends of your stitches will be strengthened by backstitching.
Step 15: The process should be repeated for the other leg.
When you're done sewing the lines on the first pantleg, sew the other one.If you repeat the process, both pantlegs will have the same amount.
