Hospitals provide easy access for healthcare providers to examine you, run tests, or check your vitals. It can be difficult to get a hospital gown to stay on without showing too much skin. You can tie your hospital gown securely if you keep a few simple tips in mind.
Step 1: The nurse will tell you if the ties go in the front or back.
There are ties in the front of some hospital gowns. If you get the chance, ask the nurse or doctor if the ties of your gown are in the front or back. You will most likely be able to figure it out after you slip the gown on if you don't get the chance. As they hand you your gown, some nurses or healthcare assistants may tell you where the ties go.
Step 2: If you can, leave your underwear on.
Unless your chest or genitals are being examined, you will most likely be able to keep on your undergarments, like your bra and underwear. Before they leave the room, ask your nurse or healthcare assistant if you are sure.
Step 3: The opening faces you if you hold the gown in front of you.
The pattern on the fabric should face away from you if the gown is turned right side out.If you want to look at the inside of the gown, keep the opening in front of you.Think of the gown as a robe that you put on backwards.
Step 4: The sleeves of the gown have your arms through them.
Depending on the hospital you are in, your gown may have short or long sleeves. The gown is hanging off your shoulders with the opening in the back, if you pull your arms all the way through. The gowns hit below your knees.
Step 5: In a bow, tie the laces behind your neck.
The laces on most hospital gowns sit above your shoulders.Take 1 lace in each hand and tie them together. It will be difficult to untie the bow later on if you double knot it.
Step 6: If they tie in back, Tie the laces behind your back.
There is a second set of ties at your lower back.If that is the case, grab 1 lace in each hand and reach behind yourself.Keep your gown closed by tying the laces together in a bow.Pull the ties to one side of your body so you can see them better if you are having trouble tying a bow behind your back. You can let the gown go if you tie them.Your backside might not be fully covered by the gowns that tie in the back.
Step 7: If it ties in front, pull the lower tie around.
Lower ties in the front of some hospital gowns provide more coverage. If you see a tie near your hips on the front of your gown, reach behind you to find the second tie.Bring the tie near your back and tie them together in a bow.The 2 ties will connect near your hip on one side so that you have more coverage on your backside. The material of the gowns that tie in the front and back are different.
Step 8: Ask your doctor if you can wear pants under the gown.
Everyone in a hospital gown doesn't need to take off all of their clothing.Check with your healthcare provider to see if you can wear sweatpants underneath your gown. You may not be able to put pants under your gown if you have a catheter in your lower body.It is worth asking. You can ask for a second gown to wear as a robe if your gown opens in the back.
