How To Unclog a Dishwasher

The dishwasher may not drain as quickly if there is a problem with the drain hose.If left unattended, these problems can become serious.Remove the kickplate from the dishwasher and loosen the hose's wire clamps. If you want to remove the clogs, bend the hose back and forth, or flush it with water.Attach the drainage and recirculation hoses to the dishwasher after you finish unclogging.

Step 1: Pick out your supplies.

You can find most of the dishwasher supplies around your home.If you need to purchase supplies or replacement parts, go to your local hardware store. You will need: Clean rag Flashlight, garden hose Pan, pliers, and coat hanger.

Step 2: The dishwasher's power source needs to be disconnected.

Plug the dishwasher into the wall outlet. If your dishwasher is wired into your home's electrical supply, it may require you to flip a breaker in the circuit breaker panel to stop the power. It's possible that some fuse boxes are poorly labeled. If power has been cut to your dishwasher, make sure it can't turn on after you switch off a breaker.

Step 3: The kickplate needs to be removed.

There is a piece of metal or wood below the door of the dishwasher. If necessary, use a screwdriver to remove the kickplate's fasteners. If you want to keep the screws where they won't be lost, set the plate off to the side.Depending on the model of dishwasher you have, your kickplate may use different kinds of screws. If you want to reach the screws in a dishwasher, you may need to have the door open.Remove the kickplate after closing the door.

Step 4: The drain hose can be found.

The sink drain has a drain hose attached to it.The drain hose should run between the dishwasher pump and the drain. The lower spray bar is where the dishwasher pump is located. The hose is made of plastic. The drain hose may be designed so that it runs between the pump and the air gap at the top of the sink or garbage disposal. The spray bar of a dishwasher is a thin strip of metal with jets on top.The upper and lower bar may be used for each inner basket. There is a second hose next to the drain hose. This recirculation hose may have a problem.Don't use this hose for now, focus on the drainage hose.

Step 5: Take a look at the hose.

The hose should be replaced if the plastic shows signs of wear and tear. The hoses should be replaced with kinks as well. You can find replacement parts at your local hardware store. There are shards of glass that can tear the hose.Poorly supported hoses form Kinks.Zip ties or a water resistant cord can be used to support the areas of the hose that are sagging. Some models need a special accessory. The parts can be ordered from the manufacturer.Information on ordering can be found in the owner's manual.

Step 6: A drip pan can be used to prevent spillage.

Under the point where the hose connects to the dishwasher, place a shallow pan.Baking sheets, paint trays, or casserole dishes can be used to catch anything left in the line.As you work, keep a dry rag.Hardware can be slippery. It's a good idea to wipe wet hardware with your dry rag.

Step 7: The drain hose needs to be disconnected.

If you have a flashlight, you can see where the hose connects to the pump. There will be a wire connection. If you want to loosen it, pinch it with pliers and slide it up the hose.Pull the hose away from the dishwasher pump. You may need to wiggle the hose back and forth to loosen it, especially with older models. It's a good idea to remove the wire clamp from the hose to prevent it from getting lost.Put this in a safe place with the kickplate screws.

Step 8: Break it up with your body.

Take the hose in your hand and bend it back and forth for the entire length.Light obstructions may be resolved with this.If you feel resistance when bending the hose, there is a problem. These areas need to be targeted. You should keep the end of your hose positioned over the drip pan or bucket if you want to catch anything that falls out.

Step 9: Use a garden hose to flush the drain hose.

A directed stream of water should be able to clear up your mess.Hold a garden hose to one end of your drain hose and turn on the water supply to get rid of obstructions. The same way as garden hoses can be used with Faucets with similar pressure.Hold the end of the drain hose that goes to the faucet and turn it on.

Step 10: The hose should be snaked for stubborn obstructions.

Use pliers to get the coat to fit.Push the hanger out through the other end when completely straight. It's useful for severe obstructions.Make sure your coat hanger is straight. The corrugation of the drain hose can be damaged by bent ends.

Step 11: Remove obstructions from the recirculation hose.

The recirculation hose should be fastened the same way as the drain hose.Put your catch pan in place, remove the hose, and apply flushing and snaking techniques.

Step 12: There are hoses that can't be unblocked.

You may need to replace your hose in the rare case that your blockage is too severe to be removed by wire hanger snaking. You can buy replacement hoses from your local hardware store, home center or the manufacturer in the manner described in your dishwasher's manual. If there are no issues with your hose or if you replaced it and it still doesn't work, you may have an issue with the drain. You will likely have to remove it.

Step 13: The hoses need to be connected.

The hoses should be pushed back onto the pump connections. The hoses should be moved back up to their original position.Attach your pliers by pinching them until they are firmly fastened.

Step 14: Check for leaking hoses.

When the dishwasher is empty, return power to it and run a normal cycle. As it runs to verify everything, watch it.If you notice an abnormal leak while running your dishwasher, turn it off immediately.Remove the hoses that leak. It's possible that you need to replace a hose.
